GAS TAX SHOW INCREASE
Motorist Will Pay $4,000,000 More - Than In 1935; Paid FFrom Low Incomes
Indiana motorists this year will pay $4,000,000 more in gasoina taxes than they paid in 1935, Leland K. Fishback of Indianapolis secrctary of the Indiana Petroleum Industries committee, asserted at an eleven-state conference on automotive taxation being held under the auspices of the American Petroleum Industries comImittee. Delegates representing state committees of petroleum refiners, distributors and service station operatorg in Illinois, Indiana, lowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota Missouri Ne-. braska, North Dakokta, South Dakota and Wisconsin are attending the comnference.
““Motorists in Indiana are the state's No. 1 taxpayers. They contrihute more tax money in special and general taxes to the s;y.te treasury than any other group, despite th 2 fact that as a class they are not wealthy, or even well off. Studies have indicated” said Mr. Fishback ‘‘that more than half of the motorists in Indiana 2arn less than $3O a week. Most of them
have never owned a new car. ‘They ride an average of 40 eight-hour days
a year, much of that time being spent in going to and from work.. The typl. cal Indiana motorist must work one to two weeks to pay the taxes on his motor travel. The typical Indiana motorist owns a car four or five years old, whose value is less than $2OO. The special automotive taxes that he pays to the state and federat governments are equivalent to 25 to 50 per cent of the value of his car.”
