INTEREST COSTS TAKES 14 CENTS
U. S. Estimates ‘835 Million Wil Be Spént On Debt Obligations
At least 14 cents out of every dollar paid by federal taxpayers in the current fiscal year is being spent for interest on the highest national ieht in history, treasury statistics showed. E
This compares with 17 cents last year and only 2 cents just prior to the United States’ entry into the World War. :
The 14 cents figure is based on the president’s budget estimate that this fiscal year’s government income will aggregate $5,828,150,719. However, there is a likelihood that this figure will be increased because of definite indications that revenue will pnot come up to expectations. - Budget statisticians estimated that $835,000,000 would be spent this year to meet interest obligations on the national debt now at $34,728,000,000 but which is expected.to reach 35 bil lion by June 30 end of the fiscal year, Dspite the increase in the nationai debt, a relatively smaller. poriion of th taxpayers’ dollar is being used tn pay interest on the government’s indebtedness. This is due to great'y increased federal revenue and lower interest rates growing out of refunding operations. .
The average interest rate on the public. debt, latest treasury figures show is 2,573 percent. In the fall of 1932 i- was 3.332. ’ 1i budget estimates for the 1932 fiscal vear were fulfilled only 11 cents of €2¢h revenue dollar would be used for meeting the public debt interest which is expected to total about $860,000,000. Warns Postmasters Not to Aceept Mice
Second - Agsistant Postmaster General Tarllee Branch sternly warned all American postmasters to quit accepting live mice for shipmegt through the mails : He said they were strictly against the rules, but he didn’'t say why. One reason is because they’re liable to chew their way out of their container and make a meal off the adjoin ing mail. :
Much interest centers in the suit in the LaGrange circuit court in which the commissioners of LaGrange county seek to condemn certain land owned by Owen Gilbert at Gilbert’s corners on U. S. 20 seven miles east of LaGrange for right of way for the extension of road 3. The appraisers have set the value of the land at 31,140. : A
