This - resurfacing of 266 miles of state highwayg is ‘n addition to the hundreds of miles whick are being improved by surface trealment or ofling and the other miles which are being improved by comstruction. To a .large extent the surfacing is a replacement of state highway surfaces which have hecome worn and unsatisfactory under traffie, or is an improvement of the ‘existing sarface. Approximately 55,000 tons ot rock asphalt and 27620 gallons of liquid asphalt will be required for the resurfacting program ipaugurated by the State Highway Commission this summer. Taie work is being done under contract and is sup ervised by the maintemance division of the state Highway Commission. The resurfacing of the 266 iiles of state highways necessitates establishments of detours during the time that the material is being placed on the highway and is Leing prepared for traffic. . With favorable weather conditions, detoura are required tor only a few days and are removed as soon Aas the new suarface is ready for traffic. Detours for the ressurfacing, lke those Zor construction and other state highway fmprovements, are marked for the guidance of motoristg over the hest and shortest alternate route

New Dealers are counting today upon organized and Independent progressive endorsement to offset the agrarian political boit organized by Willlam Lemke, farm belt presidential candidate of the newy formed Union party. The expected progressive endorsement of President Roosevelt would be a part of the continuing process of political party realignment which received tremendous impetus in the 1932 election.

Campaign plans outlined at Washington by Democratic Committee Chairman Jameg A. Farley provide for opening of mational headguarters in the Biltmore hotel, New York August 1. The Washington committee headquarters will maintain a skeleton staff. There will be no regional headquarters, Farley said, although there mav be one or twe speakers bureau represetnatvies outside New York City.

Rep BSam Rayburn, Democrat Texas, has been named chairman of the speakers’ bureau with headquarterg in New York. Mr. Ronsevelt's formal campaign will begin shortly aftep September 1. Farley estimate ed New Deal campaign expenditures at $2,000,000, against $3,000,000 for the Republicans.
