Motorists Pay Less For Highways The average Hoosler motorist paid less in gasoline tax and motor veh'cle license feeg for maintenance and improvement of the nine-thousand-mile

state highway gystem in 1935 than he paid for maintenanlé and improvement of the state highway system of balf that mileage fn 1926. Records of the State Highway Commssion, James D). Adams chairman pointed out, show that in 1926 the commission received from gasoline tax and motor vehicle licouse tees an gverage of $14.17 per molo vehicle registered in Indiana. In 1935 receipts of the highway commission from these sources averaged but $13.58 per vehicle registration. In 1929 the average was $15.13 and in 1932, $22.72 per vehicle registered. Registration of metor velicles increased nearly oné hundrel thousand from 1926 to 1935. Reduction of the receipts of the state highway commission by using a part of these funds to replace property tax for roads and st'eats, has curtailed work on the highway system financed with state funds. Thise curtailment has not been apparent during the past three years when special grants of tedeial funds bhave been allocated to Indiapa for fmprovement and construction on the state highway system.
