TO CUT COST OF GOVERNMENT. | Retallers of Indiana Want Budgets Combed to Bring Lower Taxes in the State, A concerted drive to reduce taxes throunghout the state has been initiated by the Association of Retailers of Indiana, who with other taxpayers’ organizations assisting plan to reach iout into every unit of government in an effort to reduce budgets, which are now in procesg of formation. | “No increase anywhere,” is the first objective. Then comes the second, of equal importance, “Prune expenses wherever possible.” . Working upon the theory that the only way to save money for the taxpayers is not to spend it, these citizen groups are calling upon taxpayers throughout the state to be alert, watch the budget making, demand reductions wherever possible, and revolt at the thought of increases. An analysis of taxation figures shows that the largest portion of the taxation burden comes from minor units of the state—cities and towns, townships, school districts and counties. The state tax is a minor part of the taxes paid. _ This meang that budget making in local communities will affect the taxpayers’ purse more than the legislature’s state budget nex:i winter. Local budget making is within the reach of the people. They can determine its results by activity at the right | time- - ‘Within the next sixty days, local budgets will be perfected. Now is the time for local taxpayers to get into action. Then after doing a good job at home they can go before the legislature with good grace and demand similar economy on the part of the state. With this intensive program of retrenchment in operation, tax payers’ organiatzions hope to make a decided dent in the 1935 tax hbill of the state. o :
