State Pays $1,610,000.
~ Payments of more than a million ‘and a half dollars were made to contractors on work completed and unedr progress during June; it was stat« ed today by James D. Adams, chairman of ‘the State Highway Commissicn. . Payments to contractors on work which is financed by both federal and state funds, totalled $1,640,000 during the month. : Favorable weather for highway and lbridge construction prevailing during June and the unusual number of projects which were under way shot the payments on completed and partially completed work past the million and a half dollar mark. Normally, payments to contractors have not been as large in June but the action of the highway commission in getting the 1934 program under contract during the early gpring gave the contractors an early start this year. A large amount of the amount paid to contractors during June was paid out by them in wages to the thousands of men who are employed on highway and bridge construction work over the state. With few exceptions men employed on these projects are taken from the communities in which the work is being done. ‘
