THE ISSUE 1S SETTLED.
fNo question remains, as to the real issue involved in the political election this year. It was outlined recently by President Roosevelt when he placed before the people the propos tion of whether they preferred the }‘lefw Deal that has been promoted during little more than a year he has been in office of whether they desire a return to the old order of Hoover, Mills, Mellon and their group. The issue has been accepted by Henry P. Fletcher, republican national chairman, an exponent of the Hoover policies and it is now clear cut and ready for the decision of the people. Mr. Fletcher has answered the president, asserting that the republican party accepts the issue of the new deal and adding that the broad issue ip the approaching election is (he right of theé people to govern the v selves. Of course, more confidence would be felt in this statement of Mr. Fletcher if he would explain in wha! manner the leadership of his pav:y expects to extend this right to tht people. If it is to be gained by a Teturn of the old order of Hooverism, 1o which Mr, Flatcher is committed, they the people know his words are just throat rattles of & dying dynaslys that failed them in their darkest hour. The righfq,%_cf the people to govern themselves 'were taken from them by the very leadership that now proposcs to return these rights, which is rather hollow, sounding and inconsistent. According to Mr. Fletcher the WNew Deal is not democratic ‘because it does not come from the peopie. It is apparent that he is somewhat mixed ii his- wuse of prepositions. Nothing could have come ‘from’ the people after the years during which they had been ‘milked by the type of leadership his party gave them. He would have been correct had he stated that the New Deal is democratic because it comes ‘for’ the people, all of them and not a chosen few. It is characteristic of republican Jleadership of the past and present ‘that the national chairman should attack the manner in which relief from the deperssion has been spread to the greatest number ol pebple. That leaders has always catered to the few and it is unwilling that its castles of wealth and power should ibe disturbed in order that the masses might share in the natural bemniefils -which the country has to offer. His brow is creased with worry over the spending of money to revive the masses of peodle who were being choked by the “lethargy of the dying republican leadership. He worries about the coming generations and the payments of obliagtions Ibeing made today. He might well have worried several yearg ago when the nation was on the prink. He might well stop and think what might have been had Herbert Hoover been re-elected and his policies continued. ; The New Deal is the issue says the republican national chairman. Right he is, and there.is on need to sidetrack the issue. The repuplican candidates for congress from the twelve districts of Indiana must accept the mandate of their national chairman. They must be for the old order, for Hooverism; havoc and reactionary policies. The issue is settled and SO is the outcome. The twelve Indiana congressmen will return to the posts to which they were elected two years ago to take part in formulating the ‘New Deal. That was the will of the people then as they asserted their richts and it continues their will.

Indiana Wheat Crop Normal,
Despite a severe spfi%drought, Indiana’s wheat crop appears to be normal and of fine quality, B. B. Benner, secrétary of the Central States Crain Corporation said today. (Riaports from various ,counties show that the yield is from 20 to 36 ‘bushels an acre, he said. “The growing corn crop also is extraordinary promising,” Benner declared. ““It has good color, is well rooted and is far in advance of the same period of last year. ‘““The - oats crop has been hardest hit by the dry weather and can make only one-third to one-half a crop. A large percentage of oats has been cut for hay. “The extremely hot sun parched a lot of the young rowing clover after the protecting wheat was cut, causing some concern for next year’s pasture and hay crop. The potato crop in the state is sort.”
- |Diversified farming in Indiana enables Hoosier agriculturalists to escape total failure in any one crop, Benner said.
