FALLS TO OWN REGULATIONS New Patronage Code AffeCts Sister-in-law In Auto License Depart- - ment - The state administration plans no reprisals for “disloyalty” in the Democratic state convention, Pleas Greenlee, executive secretary to Gov. Paul V. McdNutt said in announcing new patronage regulations. It had been reported that St. Joseph county, which swung its support to Shermon Minton, the administration candidate for United States senator, would receive a large share of patronage as a reward. “St. Joseph county does not expect anything and will not get anything,”. Greenlee said. “Dismissals ordered since the convention have been in the interests of efficiency.” : iGreenlee fell victim to one of his own regulations in announcing the new state house patronage code that only one member of a family may hold a state job. : His sister-in-law Mrs. Clara Green lee, receives $lOO a month in the auto license department. “She will have to go”’ Greenlee ruled when the matter was called to his attention, He did however justify two other cases -involving his family. : His father-in-law, Sampson A. Cassady Shelbyville is a game warden, receiving $ll5 a month, and his sister, Mrs. Mabel Montfort has been gecretary of the Shelbyville school board for 12 years. “] don’t consider Mr. Cassady a member of my immediate family,” !Greenlee said. A ~ “That’s what the rule is intended for—to apply to members of the im‘mediate family.” An execption was made in the case of his sister because of the length of time she had held her post.
Grade Crossing Are ProteCted Only thirteen per cent of the 237,000 rail-highway grade crossings in the country are specially protected withgates, watchman or audible signals according to J. P. Hutchens Secretary-Manager of the Fort Wayne Motor Club which is affiliated with the A, A. A. : In making this statement Mr. Hutchens declared it emphasizes the importance of a continuing program to elimiate these highway “danger spots” and also the meed for care on the part of motorists in crossing railroad tracks. ;
“Despite the widespread program for the separation \of grades,” -he continued, “the number of rail-high-way crossings is increasing. At the end of the year 1926, there were 235,158 such crossings. or 1.877 less than there were at the end of 1932. “Rhode Island leads the gtates ~in the greatest percentage of protected crossings. More than sixty-four percent of those in the state are specially protected. Massachusetts is second with fifty-nine per cent .and New Jersey is third with forty-six per cent. In South Carolina and North and South Dakota less than three per cent of the rail-highway crossings are gpecially protected.” ‘Warning motorists to exercise care ‘at rail-crossings the A. A. A. club executive said: «Elimination of dangerous crossings in the interest of national safety is, of course, most desirable. Federal public work funds are being used for this. purpose and some progress is being made. But; such a program is _,necessa.rily slow and costly. “Meantime, motorists can do much to help reduce grade crossing accidents -and safeguard themselves by exercising jndividual care. They should. caustionsly approch unprotect ed crossings. They should have the car in first or second gear. And persons in the car should not be talking or making any moise that might drown out the sound of an approaching train.” o e !
