Death toll of two smashing summer storms rose to twelvé with addi tion of six fatalities in a week-end gale which swept three states. Property loss was estimated at close to $1,000,000. Rain and hail which followed the wind faileg to break a widespread heat wave. As least 13 additional deaths were traceable directly 1o efforts to escape sultry city temperas tures. :

Small buildings were wrecked, growing crops beaten into thz mud ang hundresd of trees and telephone poles snapped by squalls which chased each other across Minnesota, Wisconsin. and Illinois Sunday at velocities exceeding 60 miles per hour.

Warsew Man Held for Embezzlenient. John Ramsey, 48, of Warsaw, is bheing held in the South Bend jail on charges of embezzlement and forgery. He was jailed on a affidavit of Fred D Cunningham, investigator for the American Surety company. Ramsey is charged with gelling $l,lOO worth of hbonds, the property of his mother, Mrs. Alfred Ramsey, of Warsaw, to a South Bend man by the name of Bowman.

Cattled Killed, Truck Damaged

Damage estimated at $5OO was done 5 a gasoline transportation truck iw'urday at the junction of state roads Nos. 2 and 102 when the truck driven by Earl Moore 21 of Fort Wayne ran into a heard of cattle owned by J. L. Pence. Three head of cattle were killed. The truck left road No. 2 and h-aded down an embankment striking -a pole and coasting into a field. State Motor Policeman Harry Sutherlin was called and investigated the accident. Farmers estimated the cows at $9O. The truck is owned by llarl Westerlin of Fort Wayne.

¥ollowing arraignment which lasted many hours before Special Judge Walter Stump of Auburn a change of venue to DeKalb circuit court was granted Pedro Baldo 20, Venezuelan Tri-State college student who is charged with manslaughter in the death of Thomas Swanger aged Angola resident. Baldo is alleged to have driven his car recklessly and ‘under influence of liquor striking Swanger and killing him instantly about three weeks ago. Fourth of July will be celebrated 'at Malibu Beach on Island Park, Rome City. An elaborate display of \fire works in the evening.

- ASKS $150,000 LP — : Miles Family of Elkhart, Named De- ~ fendants by Fort Wayne S People Seeking $150,000 for damages suffered in an automobile accident last ‘August in Edwardsburg, Mich., two suits weré filed against Charles F. and Racnel Miles, medicine manufacturers of Elkhart late Friday with the clerk of the federal district court at South Bend. Each suit asked $75,000 the first for Caroline Fields and the second for William Bryant both of Fort Wayne: Mr. Bryant was d{riving south on the Grand road in Edwardsburg with Miss Fields a passenger. Their automobile collided with one driven west on route No. 62 by Rachel Miles and in which Charles Miles was a passenger, : Miss Fields suffered a number of broken bones, shock, cuts and bruises and an injury to an eye that caused blindness, according to her complaint Her companion said that he suffered concussion of the brain; cuts bruises and broken bones. He also said that he spent $5OO on the repair of his automobile. : The two complaints charge negligence on the part of the defendants, failure to stop at the intersection and speed at the rate of 55 miles an hour.

Knox County Club In Lead With - 8,235 Birds To Its Credit

Renewed activity in the Indiana crow-killing contest is being shown as the campaign draws to a close, the state . conservation department reported. The contest, in which forty sportsmen’s and conservation clubs are taking part began January 15 and will conclude July 16. . A total of 61,102 crows have been killeg and officially recorded by the clubs. The crows’ feet are being preserved by the conservation department until the final standings are announced. 2 ‘ ' Cash and other awards ave to be given the clubs turning in fhe largest number of feet. ; Standings announced last week showed the Sandborn Conservation club, Knox county at the top with 8,325 birds to its credit. The Rocklane Gun Club, Johnson county is sec ond with 6,441, Others are in the following order: .Frankfiort Gun club, 5,840; Decatur County Sportsmen club, 5,639; Shelby County Better Hunting and Fishing club 4,584; Hargersville Gun club, 3,984; Lagro Fish and Game club, 3,213; Redkey Conservation club, 3,045; Fountain City Fish and Game club 5.142.

Killed in Auto Accident.

~ Mrs. Ida Workman, 60, a former resident of Goshen was almost instantly killed in a collision of auto"mobiles at the interesection of roads 30 and 13, about five miles west of Pierceton. ; Fred Workman, 65, her husband, and Mary Workman, 10, a granddaughter, was painfully cut and Ybruised. The accident occurred when Mr. Workman, driving west from Pierceton to his home, located slight1y more than a mile from the scene of the crash, drove out on road 30 ‘ into the path of a car driver. by V. Police and county authorities of Grant, Huntington and Kosciusko counties are attempting to trace two men who, armed with revolvers, stopped Irving Bishop Syracuse, near Marion and forced him to - convey them to the outskirts of Huntington, where they left his machine and entered another car after ordering him to drive back to Marion. The Peoples Loan and Saving Association Purchase Safety Deposit Boxes of F. & M. T.

The Peoples Saving and Loan Association has purchased the safety deposit boxes formerly owned by the Farmens & Merchants Trust company and these boxes are now being moved to their new home in the Casey buiilding where the association has made extensive improvements in order to accommodate its friends and patrons. ' : : .- It is not the intention of the Association to 'in any way disturb the arrangement our friends have already made to use these boxes. All parties having boxes can now come to the office f the Assciation and arrange to retain their boxegs and will have access to them just the same as when they were in the vault of the Trust company. Dies Enroute To Hospital

Frank C. Jourdan 49, prominent in the cement block -and gravel business in Elkhart for years was fatally injured when his coupe crashed into the south concrete railing of the bridge on U. S. 20 over Cobus Creek, a half-mile east of the St. JosephElkhart county line. He was alone in the car, returning from Clinton, Inds; where he is operating a gravel plant. Jordan, still breathing wah lifted from the wreckage of his car, a 1933 Plymouth coupe. He died in the amhulance enroute to the Elkhart General hospital, e 4- HPienic to be Held Here. On July 1 the schools of Whitley county are to receive a distribution of $24,800 from gross income tax. The county schools will then have received a total of $63,834.62 during the first 12 months period of distribution under the intangible gross income and excise tax.

The reorganized State Bank of Syracuse was opened for business Thursday after having been closed for a period of several months. - Officers of the new bank are: Charles Purdum, president: Noble Blocker, cashier and C. Hurd Allyn Drake, D.D., pastor of the First Prespyterian church of Kokoma, will preach twice, at 10:45 and 6:30. Dr. Drake is the vice president of Winona Lake Institutions. Death of George Shudtz. ~ George Shultz, age 11 years, native of Orange township and a lifelong Iresidten?t of Noble county, died at the 'Noble county infirmary where he had iresided since last March.
