Arrested lon ArSon Charge
Alvin Schieber who resides on a farm in Elkhart county was arrested at noon Friday by Deputy Sheriff Harold Waterman on an indictment returned by the Kosciusko grand jury ‘Wednesday, Schieber was indicteg on two counts, first and second degree arson for allegedly burning a large bank barn in Kosciusko counfy.
. Schieber owner of a farm near Warsaw is charged with having set fire to the barn ¢ nthe night of Jan. 6 and on the next day fileq a claim with the Elkhart County Farmers’ ‘Aid company Goshen fire insurance company. :
The farm was oceupied by J. F. Weaver and his family. The barn was destroyed by the flames and hay corn and farm implements owned by Weaver also burned, It is alleged that property owned by Schieber which hag@ been stored in the barn was removed to the Union township farm g day or so hefore the fire. The barn was insured for $2,000. Payment of the insurance has not been made, Warren S. Cline secretary of the company said.
DemoCrats Honor Peters
Nearly 1,000 Indiana democrats attended the "appreciation dinner for R. Earl Peters state chairman of the party. Other guests of honor were Mrs. ‘A. P. Flynn state vice chairman, Marshall Williams, secretary and Amos Wood treasurer.
Principle speaker on the program was Gov. Paul V, McNutt. He called upon the party to marshal its forces and carry owfry promise made in the 1932 campaign. . Other speakers were: Mrs. R. L.

Another. Cut Seen
Another cut of 10 per cent in addition to the statutory reductions which became effective January 1, 1933 seems probable for all ‘city employees soon who earn $1,200 a year or over gt Goshen. All members of the city council are said to favor the reduction which would affect the mayor, city clerk, members of the police and fire departments, street departmetn workers janitor of city hall, and the superintendent, engineers, linemen and troublemen of the city water and light department.
To Open Law Office
Herbert Willis for eight years secretary to Congressman David Hogg announced in Washington that after March 4 when Hoggs term expires he will open an office in Fort Wayne for the general practice of law. He is a graduate of George Washington Uni versity Law school and was admitted tosthe bar 'in DeKalb county in 1928. He is a native of Waterloo, learned the printer’s trade in his father’s news paper office and after finishing high school attended DePauw university and college of Wooster.

MAKES SURVEY OF POOR RELIEF commissioner R. E. Kenny In Plea For Co-dperation to Cut Down Burden R E. Kenny commissioner of the northern district of Noble county is making a survey of poor relief as administerd by the township trustees was in Kendallville Friday investigat~ ing conditions in Wayne township.
“Something must be done to cut down this heavy burden of expense being borne by the townships” said Mr. Kenny, ‘Of course all needy cases should be given attention but we have found that there are many instances where relief has been given to certain individuals that is not justifiable It is essential that we all co-operate if those deserving are to be aided. “We have tried to economize in evory way possible in the affairs ‘of the county and are paring down expenses all along the line where reductions can be made. At a recent special session of the commissioners we reduced the salaries of the county highway department employes from the superintendent on down.” Mr. Kenny expressed himself that conditions wounld eventually “right’ themselves ang made a plea for cooperation on the part of all—those receiving charitable relief as well as those who are able to aid the distressed. :

One of the major exhibits in the Indiana section at the Chicago Century of Progress fair will be a map of the state sixteen feet long and eleven feet wide Lee Carter Indins apolis cartographer has been commissioned to do the work, . Hills, forests Treservations, air routes, historic buildings and sites will be shown in careful miniature. Those in charge are anxious that each county be represented by the building hattleground, birthplace etc., within the respective boundaries of the county that the citizens or authorities consider to have had the most influence on Indiana’s progress during the last 100 years. -

Liquor Parties Ampomg H. S. Children.
Seth Rowdabaugh prosecuting attorney of Kosciusko county who is investigating the fatal injury of Thomas Clayton 19 of Garrett in an automobile accident, said he had information liquor parties “are a common thing among children of high school gage over the week end at northern ' Indiana lake resorts.”
Rowdabaugh said the Clayton boy had attended a party at a lake Wawsee cottage with two other boys and three girls. The prosecutor said Clay ton left the party alone and while driving at high speed struck a fence and suffered fatal injuries. He died in a Goshen hospital. William Rider of Fort Wayne a member of the party was arrested on charges of intoxication resisting an officer trespass and assault and battery. : e
Auto Crushes Man
Wilson Housman 56 who for almost 30 years served as foreman of the drill press department of the Sidway company of Elkhart was crusheq to death under the wheels of his automobile which he had been cranking at about 5:30 Thursday night. ,
The accident occurred on the west side of the Cassopolis road at the northern end of the curve bordering Simonton lake. h
Mr. Housman was alone and it was not until sometime later that his body was discovered wedged under the front of his Essex coach which had come to a stop against the posts of a small bill board. .
106 Prispners Ask Clemency
Trustees of Indiana state prison sitting as a pardon and parole board will consider 106 applications for leniency when they meet at Michigan City today.
It will be the board’s first meeting under the administration of Gov, Paul V. McNutt. - !
Of the 106 cases, 61 will be new, 41 will be reopened and four will deal with reformatory transfers.

The Avilla boys won the ' finals from the LaOtto boys, 29 to 26, in an exciting battle and the Cromwell girls defeated the Avilla girls 36 to 29.

Three Killed Two Hurt
Three persons were killed and two injured near LaPorte in two automobile accidents.
Abraham Weiner 45 and James George 40 both of Michigan City, were killed when the automobile in which they were riding collided with one driven by Dr. W. W, Ross, Laporte on State Road 20. . Miss Bertha Bailey 30 died enroute to a hospital after her automobile crashed into a ditch near the state prison farm- north of LaPorte. William Richter, Michigan City riding with Weiner and George was taken to a hospital in a critical condition. He suffereq interanl injuries.
Investigates 2 Sudden Deaths Coroner Robert C, Luekey was called to conduct investigation in the deaths of two Noble county residents over the week-end both resulting from natural causes. Mrs. Sarah Shock 73 vears died suddenly at her home in Washington township Saturday from a cerebral hemorrhage. She was a well known resident of the Cromwell community.
Clement Diffendaffer age 76 years residing north of Churubusco near Sugar Grove Green township was found ‘dead in his bed. Coroner Luckey reported death due to a heart attack. » A
Mother Given Child
After a hearing on a habeas corpus write directed against C. Tressler of near Ligonier, Judge Rob R. McNagny in Noble circuit court awarded the custody of a son of Mrs Ruth Beauvien of Ligonier to the ‘mother, The Noble county board of children’s guardians had entered a complaint in the proceedings alleging that the mother was mot a proper person to have custody of the child. :
Native of County Dies
Mrs. Melissa Sayles 71 widow of Charles P. Sayles and a native of WNoble county died at the Elkhart coun ty infirmary after a long illness of a complication of ailments. She was born in Noble county March 15 1861, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Valen‘tine Hahn ang had lived in Goshen for forty years. Surviving relatives include two sons a daughter and six brothers and sisters. :

‘SENTBENCE THREE TO FARM Tric Who Confessed To Butchering Stolen LivestoCtk Get Six Months ; Three Elkhart men who confessed to butchering and stealing meat from farms near Goshen were under sentence to serve six months at the state penal farm = They must also pay a fine of $25 each. The three were sentenced late Wednesday by Judge Orrin M. Conley of teh superior court at Elkhart, after they had pleaded guilty to a charge of third degree burglary. The maximum sentence for this offense is one year at the penal farm and a fine of $3OO.
Although there was some indication that Bdwin P, Huffman 28, may ‘have been the leader in the illicit butchering, he received the same sentence as his companions, Arnold F. Pate 30, and Lester M. (Jack’ Pate 32. - They had confessed to killing a steer at he Ralph Rensberger farm southeast of Goshén Dec. 21 and to slaughtering a calf at the Jerry Neterer farm southwest of Goshen last Monday night, \
Woman Sentenced
Mrs. Evelyn [Rice of Rome City pleaded guilty to a charge of malicious destruction of property before Judge Rob R.McNagny and was sentenced to 90 days in the woman’s prison at Indianapolis and fined $5 and costs. -
'The charge was based on the burning of a garage at the woman’s home allegedly for the purpose of collecting $l5O insurance. : Kenneth Moore a roomer at the Rice home has pleaded guilty to a charge of arson in connection with the same fire which occurred several weks ago, but has not yet been sentenced,
[ Elkhart Township Farmer Robbed Lloyd Winwright a farmer residing in Elkhart township was held up on the road in front of his home as he was walking from the barn toward the house carrying two pails of milk. The bandits got $75. They approach'ed in an automobile turning out the lights and coasting up to Winwright. Hach wore a handkerchief over the lower half of his face and carried a gun. Winwrigth had the money on his person because he went into Ligonier during the day to make some purchases but failed to do so. It is believed that one of the bandits overheard a conversation and learned that he was carrying the money. :

After spending two days searching the ‘bottom of Little Cedar lake for the body of Albert Estlick 17 who was drowneq while skating a week ago Saturday Walter Johnson expert diver gave up hope of finding the body and returned to Michigan City. Former Wolf Lake Man Dies
Elmer J. Barrett 63 g resident of Wolf Lake for many years died at his home near Larwill where he had resided for fhe last three years, 3Surviving. are the widow five children, a brother and two sisters, Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.

Hitehhikes 1,000 Miles to File Charge. 0. W. Bailey former Gary city employe hitchhiked 1,000 miles to sign an affidavit charging Mayor Roswell 0. Johnson with misuse of public funds.
As a result the mayor who was freed on a similar charge in Valparaiso last week faced service of \a new warrant issued by Prosecutor Robert S. Estill.
