Lieber Makes Changes . Because of increased business in the fish and ganie division of the state conservation department a number of changes have been made in the administrative personnel of Richard Lieber director. e Ben H, Sink Jasonville an outstanding leader in fish and game work ‘has been appointed assistant superintendent of the divislon under Walter Shifts superintendent. Garry Winders of Indapapolis has become organizer for the division to co-operate with fish and game protective clubg throughout the state. He succeeds Andrew Bodine who was transferred to duty at the Jasper-Pulaski game preserve. - The three game reserves have been placed under the immediate supervision of S. F, Zufall, with the title lof superintendent of ‘'game reserves. EOther changes include appointment of Fred C. Ott custodian and game breed er at the Jasper-Pulaski reserve and Henry Moesch of the warden service who became custodian of the Brown county game - reserve succeeding ‘Oliver Neal formerly in charge who returned to the warden service. l

New Judge In Drainage Suit

When Attorney Fred L. Bodenhafer of Kendallville appeared in DeKalb circuit court as special judge of the Philip Rigg or Cedar creek drainage case he announced that he was disqualified and could not serve for after his appointment he had discovered that the drain affects Noble county and that some time ago he had been consulted professionally by Noble county land owners concerning the project. By agreement Qtto E. Grant of Fort Wayne was appointed to succeed Mr. Bodenhafer and trial on the remonstrance against the report of the drainage commissioners was resumed Tuesday,

Will Speak at Fort Wayne

The report that William H. (Alfalfa Bill’ Murray governor of Oklahoma who is being mentioned for president will deliver two speeches in Fort Wayne next Thursday was confirmed by Perry H Easton of Indianapolis, Indiana manager for Muray.

The governor will then go to Indianapolis where he will address a meeting at Cadle tabernacle in the evening. He also will speak at Marion Monticello and Gary during his stay in Indiana in addition to an address be-

Auto Business Good

The auto industry was the only business reporting a favorable showing in Indiana during January, according to the Indiana Business Review issued by the Indiana University Bureau of Business research. Auto shows and the introduction of a new type of car spurted activity the review said. Producers were busy filling orders taken at winter displays and stocking dealers with new models. Warm weather continued to retard most lines of retail business the review reported, With a few exceptions department store sales were under the number for January 1931.

Isaac Deteer attorney at law and former clerk of the Noble circuit court announced he was a candidate for the republican nomination of county clerk subject to the May primary. For some time he has been considering entering the primary race.

Mr. Deter who has been a resident of Kendallville for many years served efficiently and conscientiously as coun ty clerk during the four-year term from 1921 to 1925. Since that time he has engaged in the practice of law, Prior to his term as county clerk he engaged in the coal business.

' Short Circuit Kills Cows : ' Two milk cows owned by Camile Vevaeete, near Tamarack Ilost their lives in an odd accident last Thursday j Mr, Vevaeete who uses an electrical milking machine had just finish 'ed milking the cows when an electrical storm came up, He went to the house and after the storm went out to [ finish the morning’s work with his son 'Rene. They founl two cows in a row of 12 dead. Ags there- was no loud thunder, Mr. Vevaeete concluded his cows had been seized suddenly with a strange malady. He sent for a veter anarian. v In the meantime a neighbor came in and discovered that the iron posts of the stanchions and electric milking rods were extremely hot and could not be touched, The iron parts remained hot for hourg afterwards Electricians were called and not until afternoon could they discover where the trouble was. The wires in a pole on the road were melted together and caused a short circuit, Transfer of the current caused death of the cows. ~ Seek Boy’s Release : Mrs. Marie Giovanniello Forestville Conn., advised by Chief of Police Frank Lucas of Warsaw in reply to a request that a search be made for her missing son Michael that the boy was sentenced to the state reformatory from Koscuisko on his plea of guilty to a larceny charge, has again written Lucas seeking information as to how the release of the boy may be obtained.

Mrs. Glovanniello informed the officer that the undoing of her son was the purchase of an automobile for $25 against the wishes of hig parents, After making the purchase she said, the boy was afraid to return to his home, and apparently starteq with a companion for Chicago where the family has relatives.

The youth was sentenced on a charge of stealing a bicycle in Warsaw. He later abandoned the machine at Silver Lake.

Although all store owners of the state have not yet paid the store license and tax fees for the years back to 1929. L. C, Johnson store tax administrator has begun the work already of mailing 1932 store license certificates. :

The licenses are being mailed to those who have paid the 1932 tax. Receipts for the 1929 to 1931 store tax have been mailed to 22,000 stores in the state and about 13,000 other applications remain to be handled and receipted by the office staff, Johnson said his office force is attempting to bring receipts .on the old tax up to date, and he reminded store owners that they have until Feb. 29 to pay the 1932 tax, He said store owners should wait until the 1932 application blank is received before attempting to pay the 1932 tax.

Road 9 In 1932 Paving Progtam

State Road 9 which extends north and south through LaGrange county is placed on the 1932 paving program by the state highway commission, according to a communication to the LaGrange Chamber of Commerce from Colonel Arthur R. Melton of the high way commission, ; The paving of State Road 9 will give employment to miscellaneous labor this season and will increase travel through LaGrange county to Michigan Although the present communication does not so state it was stated by a member of the highway commission a few months ago that this highway would probably be paved with concrete. o

The highway department is engaging in an extensive paving program this year to-give employment and in pushing through the letting of contracts much earlier than ususl, ~

Teter 29 who escaped from the Indiana Reformatory last Tuesday }was arrested at Lafayette while attempting with two other men to steal an auto, g ‘ One of the other two men both of 'whom escaped was believed to be ‘Orville W. Veach 26 Lafayette who escaped from the reformatory with Teter. :

Teter told police that he did not know the names of his companions in the attempted auto theft but admitted that one of them had two shot guns and a bottle of nitroglycerin. Veach was sentenced in Cass circuit court Logansport Oct. 16 1931, for one to 10 years on grand larceny conviction,

§ Purchase of Bank Deposits Probed Prosecuting Attorney Samuel' P. Schwartz and Chief of Police John B, Kuespert South Bend has begun an investigation of complaints that deposits in closed banks are being bought up at only a fraction of their full value. ' . The inquiry was started when Mr. - Schwartz’ attention was called to a letter sent to depositors in the Union 'Trust company which closed last sum‘mer offering them 25 cents on the dollar .for their deposoits. William Jackson and Joe Turner negroes were under arrest on charges of robbing the Tinley theater of Michigan City in a $lOO holdup, They were captured after Turner allegedly fired at policemtn Walter Stults as the later arrived to guard the transfer of theater money from the ticket office. Turner fled to the roof and then backstage through a trap door. He was found hiding behind a curtain. :
