FEDERAL AID TO IDLE PERISH
Senate Defeats Radical Relief Bill 48 To 85; Victory For Hoover
; Prospects. for federal aid to the destitute perished in the senate. The $750,000,000 LaFollette-Costgan bill was defeated 48 t 0.35. ~ Congressional leaders are agreed that action means the end for the present of direct federal aid measures. ‘They may be revived later if state and municipal relief conditions® change materially. . For the present there is no likelihood of any kind of federal aid. The LaFollette bill carried to defeat with it a proposal for increased highway allocations to the states. Other plang to stimulate the federal building program were defeated as amendments during final consideration. ;
The action therefore swept the counter clean of most of the various proposals for direct federal relief advanced since congress met in Decemher. . The decision was regarded as a distinct victory for President Hoover. While he made no public statement concerning the bill, Republican leaders generally thought he would veto it. All regular Republican leaders opposed it. The Democrats split 19 voting for it and 21 against. :

“Mind” as the subject of the Les-son-Sermon in all Churches of Christ Scientist on Sunday February 21. . Among the citations which comprised the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous; he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment and preserveth the way of hig saints Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path” (Prov. 2:6-9). . The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, ‘‘Science and Health with Key to the Scripturt;s" by Mary Baker Eddy: “There can be but one Mind, because there is but one God; and if mortals claimed no othel Mind and accepted no o?lller sin would be unknown. We can have but one Mind, if that one is infinite. We bury the sense of infinitude, when ‘we admit that, although God is infinite evil has a place in this infinity, for ‘evil can have no place where all space [is filled with God”’ (p. 469).

’HIGH WATERS BAD FOR ANIMALS ConsideTable Rescue-Work By Game Wardens Reported During Past ! Month '
High waters flooding the lowlands necessiated considerable animal rescue work by game wardens in the past month and hundreds 8t rabbits opposum and other fur bearers have been removed from islands and liberated on the main stream banks accoridng to reports from various localities to Walter Shirts superintendent of fisheries and game. The animals often were found on log and brush drifts and soon would have perished, Sportsmen in many instances volunteered their services and worked with the wardens in the rescue. _ The same high waters which imperiled some of the fur animals was of immense benefit to the fish life of Indiana streams. The decayed vegetable and animal material and dead and stag nant water of almost two yeats accumulation has been washed out leaving a clean stream bed for this years spawning. Reports to Mr. Shirt’s office show the ground has been so thoroughly saturated with water that the springs are almost back to normal flow practically assuring a normal water supply in the streams this spring.
