~ Noble County to Put on Show | ~ Another big County, Show similar to the one that drew a total of over 1600 people last year will be presented under the auspices of the N’v:»lvliel County Home Division at the School lApr‘il 29 and at the Elks Temple in April 129 and at the Elks Temple in Kendallville on Thursday May Ist. The County Farm Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce of Ligonidr and Kendallville are cooperating with the women’s organization to make the show a grand success. Entertainment consisting of novelty numbers and muscial stunts will be given by the various townships, each group being alloted not to exceed ten minutes on the program. Tickets are now on sale in the townships.

Some talk is heard .about La-

Grange asking the town board to provide calcium chloride for tl?e dirt and gravel streets of the city. The chemical holds moisture in a street and retards the forming of chuck holes and holds down the dust for a considerable period. Some cities provide this chemical at public expense while others charge property owners for it. :

Ligonier used calcium last year and will do so again this season. i The LaGrange county highway department will use about 25 tons of the dust laying material. .

Calf Entangles Aged Woman |

Mrs. Noah Shutt aged widow liying alone on a farm near Bright?n was found lying on the ground with a fractured hip Tuesday afternoon by neighbors. She was rushed to t!}le physicians’” office at Howe and was then taken to the Memorial hospital at Sturgis where the fracture was reduced. : %

Mrs. Shutt who is 75 years old was fetding a calf. Her foot bgeame entagled in its chain and she was thrown to the ground and h'ad to lie there until neighbors found her.

Chureh Dissension Cause of Murder Church dissension was advanced hs a likely motive for the murder of E. D. Uierson Negro Chicago whose bullet-riddied body was pulled from the Muscatatuck river at Scottsburg the other day. : : e The wife of the slain man in messages from Chicago said her husband was about to report to national officers of the tNational Baptist convention that a $62,000 loan fund to the church at Nashville Tenn., had been exposed to discrepancies. - ' ’

Will Tour State Again.

The second annual tour of Indiana by air will start on June 16 this year and end June 21 it was announced by the Indiana Aireraft Trades association. :

Many of the cities included in last year’s tour will be on this year’s itinerary. Lee Hottel is director of the tour.

Middlebury now has a population of 656 as compared with 559 in 1920. .

Handle Only Clue to Driver

John N. McFeeters 29 radio singer was dead at Indianapolis from injuries received when he was struck Sufiday night by a hit and run motorist whom police have not yet located. = A handle from a door of the vampire car knocked off in the terrific impact when McFeeters was catapulted against the curb was the only clue police possessed in their search for the reckless motorist. v :

Elkhart On Standard Time

~ Although Elkhart city will officially remain on Central Standard time this summer as a result of the referendum vote taken last fall many of the larger industries will operate on daylight sav ing time it has been announced. A movement is en foot to call a meeting of all manufacturing institutions of the city for the purpose of adopting a daylight schedule for all industries.

Man Fatally Hurt

Arvid Anderson 60 of Chicago was fatally hurt and his horse was killed when the sulky in which Anderson was driving along state road 30 about three miles east of Valparaiso was struck by a car driven by Clarence Carpenter of North Judson. :

Train Wrecks Bainter’s Ford.

Melvin Bainter of New Paris is holding the floor with an account of his narrow escape from death under the wheels of a Winona interurban. Bainter driving a Ford truck approached the Winona crossing -in New Paris with his attention centered on Vera (Gonderman who was crossing the high way near him. Consequently the approach of a freight car on the traction line was upmoticed by him until it crashed into the side of the Ford, throwing the driver out and crushing the truck beyond repair. Despite the shaking he received when he collided with the ground and the scare the entire event gave him Bainter resumed work at the New Paris creamery the following day minus a Ford.

Syracuse Man Is Fined

Charles Harris 32 of Syracuse arrested in that city on the charge of check forgery entered a plea of guilty to the charge of petit larceny in Goshen city court and was fined $ll and costs. : :

Harris was charged with passing a fraudulent check for $ll on the Isaac E. Rummel grocery store in Goshen. His agreement to make the check good led Deputy Prosecutor J. S. Yoder to change the charge from forgery to petit larceny. '

Factory Is Damaged by Fire

The Boyer Manufacturing company suffered a loss of .about $5,000 early Thursday when fire badly damaged the company’s plant at Winona Lake The fire of unknown origin started in a steel lined room used as an office and for the manufacture of fishing tackle. : e

C. A. Boyer owner estimated that 14,000- completed fishing tackle floats and thousands of uncompleted floats were destroyed. L

Loeoking For Master

Passengers on trains going through IChesterton the past few days have been puzzled over antics of a small mongrel dog which. meets all trains and snuffs intently about the car steps Thursday a friend of Steve Galias’ explained the dog’s movements. Steve was killed near the station a week ago. His dog never knew what became of him and will not leave the place where he lost track of his master. v

-~ That Bottomless Pit.

The bottom has again fallen out of the sinkhole on State Road 6 just west of Kendallville, After foreman H. C. Plummer had worked nights and Sundays and had made real progress they thought building it up to about three feet above the water level—then it happened. Wednesday morning when the crew went that way again, they found about 200 feet of the'sink hole covered with water.

Motor Fumes Kill Man

- Fumes from a running automobile engine asphyxiated George M. Baitinger former St. Joseph Mich., furniture dealer at the home of a son in Gary. o 2

The son Dr. H. M. Batinger found the body in the garage lying beside the auto. :

Gasoline Poor Stuff as Kindling Critical burns were suffered by Imogene Amick 10 of Goblesville when gasoline that she threw onto live coals in the kitchen range exploded.

‘The girl ran into the street clothing aflame and Harry Roth a neighbor put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher. : e e

Cost. to See B. B. Tournament

S, imakerhal] fhon gl $L10; 755.51 to see high school teams in tournament play during the last season according to a report to the Indiana High School Athletic association released Thursday night. Of this amount $40,254 came from the final tournament at Indianapolis. - The .association retained $45,701.10 ‘while the remainder after deduction of expenses will be distriubted among tcompeting schools. The 64 sectionals brought in-a total of $124,965.41 with Gary contributing the most of any one $8,406.70.

Regional receipts added $45,486.10 to this amount. Muncie contributed the most with §6,718. Washington home of the state champions had receipts of only $756.40 and was the only one to fall under the $l,OOO mark.

Retail Buying 75 Per Cent Normal.

~ Some revival of industry and a severe slump in building describes business conditions in Indiana today. Retail trade under the stimulus of spring buying is around Y 5 per cent of normal. » v

Among encouraging factors industrially is agreement of a new wage contract for the state’s coal mines, The agreement will be in effect until April 1 1931. : S

Jailer Jailed

The Rushville city jail empty these many months was occupied again today by the jailer Ed Beatty charged with bootlegging. = . Sheriff Claude Thompson raided the jail a few hours earlier and found a quart of liquor in one of the vacant cells and a gallon in the house of Jailer Beatty nearby. The jailer was placed in his jail until he could raisé bond of $5OO. ;

Wakarusa Gains 156 In Census

. The population of Wakarusa as shown by a preliminary count of the returns of the fifteenth census taken April 1 1930 is 972- as compared with 816 on January 1 1920. The 1930 figures are preliminary and subject to correction but the above returns show a gain of 156 in 10 years There were 17 farms enumerated in this area at the fifteenth census.
