Fishback, state gasoline tax collector. ' ‘ : :
The states that surpassed Indiana last year were California first, with $32,276,918; Ohio, with $25,818,985; Pennsylvania with . $21,889,064 and Michigan, $20,200,021 and Texas, $17,945,637. - Indiana in 1928 with its more than eleven millions in collections, had a total of almost as much as the entire United States cellected in 1922, when the nation paid in $12,000,000 for its gas. In 1921 only $4,700,000 was collected. lln 1929, it is estimated that the total will be $400,000,000; Gasoline tax collections are distributed with three-fourth of the total going to the state highway department and the remaining quarter to the counties, cities and towns.
In the enormous production of petroleum, from which gasoline is refined to keep the nation’'s automobiles running, Indiana in 1928 produced 1,053,000 barrels, or 12 per cent of the nation’s t0ta1—900,364,000 barrels. A total of nineteen stat s produce petroleum, while 20 refine it.- Texas produces the largest’percentage of the total, which is 2853 per cent; Oklahoma is second with 27.72 per cent and California is third with 25.76 per cent, Indiana refines a daily capacity of 147,000 barrels, the 1929 figures show.
