- Continue Corn Borer Fight Unless more postitive control measures are generally adopted in the older infested areas by 1931 European corn horer spreading across Indiana will do noticeable commercial damage to the state’s greatest agricultural crop, Frank N. Wallace state entomologist declares in his annual report to Richard Lieber, director and to members of the conservation commisslon. It is entirely possible that very light damage may occur in some fields in 1930 if weather conditions prevail that permit a high rate or survival of the larvae that hatch from eggs laid the report continues. :
European corn borer has prevailed in ‘lndiana for the past four years but intensive work of the entomology division of the state conservation department county agents of Purdue university federal government and most of the farmers in affected areas, has so far held borer increase to a minimum with practically no commercial damage. To better direct the fight against this ruthless destroyer of tl.xe insect world the conservation department maintains a laboratory at Auburn near the center of the first visitation. :
Increase of borers is noted by comparison of the scout work of 1928 and 1929. In the total areas scouted in 1928 there was an average of 1.87 infested hills found per acre. In 1929 an average of 9.80 infested hills were found to the acre or an increase of 5.24 times more than last year.
