% The Two Great § - . ‘ = L ; . 3 Surprises > . : ; 2 | ? By DUFORD JENNE > u’\T OW,; look here, little girl, you ‘ L have been my secretary too i long to fool me,” Mr. Cummings said i:emly. *You have something very ixnuch on your mind or your heart, Ellen. You better let me help wou. Confession is good for the soul, you ! know?> » - “It’s on. my heart, 1 guess, Mr. Cum- | mings,” ‘she said bravely, and then the story came—aided by his “gentle ’ questioning. The story of the love between her and Ted Hamlin, of their happiness together, their planning for a home together because he, like her, l was fatherless and motherless: and | then the trouble—the wedding dite ‘ put off by Ted three times, the quar- { rel, and then— . I Mr. Cummings wuas drumming on ‘ the table. He was lo2king out of Ihe great winlow of his -office; and hoa ] seemed to be dreaming. The hum of | the factories around them came into ! the oflice, but his voice as he spoke ‘ a bit wistfully made the room seemn ‘ very quiet to Ellen, . “Probably one of the most beiauti- - il things in the world is absolute Lrust between a man and a woman,” he mused in his gentle way, “I'mi o | bachelor, as you know but—well, lot - me tell you a story.” | So the letters waited and the fietories hummed on, while Mr. (um-' mings, hesitating at times dgeamod over the days of his youth and the . girt ‘he had loved : *‘ Mr. Cummings came to with a start, | He turned to her. “So you sce, Ellen, a little more trust, a little more faith, You better get in touch with Ted. Perhaps he put off the wedding date, not because he was losing his love for ..Wm, but for some other reason.’ l But Ellen’s mind was full of 1113, story she had heard. “But do you stil love her, Mr. Cummings?” shel queried. j i : He smiled at her wide serious eyvs,g reached into his desk, and drew ouraal photograph. . Lllen looked at it in | Ssilence. An f}]-)[}(‘x'inus but lovely t'ucel looked out at her. : [ That evening Ellen pondered the | matter; long, but she had sometiling | else to think of. When she tin:n"y% made up her mind that she simp.y | could not write to Ted, her pride still : strong, .she turned to the other thing | she had in mind. It fascinated I;qu'.‘ Could she bring Mr. Cummings and his sweetheart of long ago together? On the back of the photograph she had noticed an address and a name— Ruth Densmore. [
The next day, she put the plan in operation, and the result was, on the folloswving Monday, when her vacation began, she took the train to the Northern village where Ruth Densmore lived. ; When, later on, she stood before the stately home back among the elms, her courage almost failed her, and she felt that she was on a. fool's errand. When the door opened, and slis faced a tall woman, with hair slightly silvered but with dark eyes and lovely face, her courage revived. In the comfortable living room, Ellen told her errand, brokenly at tinies, but with a rush of words -at other times. She watched the older woman's face change from sadness to tenderness, then to great longing. In the end, she said with a voice that trembled slightly : - “I thought Will had forgotten me though I have never forcotten him, How foolish we were—how foolish wa were! DBut this dear little scheme of yours—ll don’t know.” She mused. “ls it pride still?? Ellen asked shyly. . - The other started and smiled. “I'm afraid itsis. Stay with me for dinner and we will talk it over.” On Monday morning, two wecks later, the clerks in the outer oflice looked up with interest at Ellen, her cheeks flushed and- her:’ eyes bright with excitement, and they saw following her a woman whose youth had passed without tgking some of youth's immortal charm. ' Ellen stepped into the office. Mr. Cummings was there and—another— Tedl ' Mr.: Cammings chuckled as he saw her face. “Now, Ellen, forgive me for mixing in your affairs, but I made up my mind I would have a surprise for you when you returned. Ted and I have beg;ome good friends. The reason why he put off the wedding was because he was building a surprise home for you—and he couldn’t quite make it go. I've given him some business—and the home will be ready! Now what do you say?’ ' Ellen sapk back against the door, staring at Ted. His eyes were shining. She wanted to rush into his arms; she fought back her emotion as she remembered—and turned. : “And I have a surpris. for you, Mr., Cummings, I have some one here,” she said breathlessly, and opened the door back of her. - ‘ She saw Mr. Cummings rise from his desk as he saw who entered. His lips meved but though no sound came the hunger and joy in his eyes made Ellen’s heart sing, - g “Ruth—my dear!” were his broken words, ‘ - . Then Ellen felt strong arms around her. She was hurried out, the door closed, and she looked up into Ted’s eyes, and then his lips were on hers; and Ellen did not even think of the astoynded clerks wh¢ were . looking on—she had a few .kisses herself to glve back. : ' : (Copyright.)

No White Man Carries ' - Own Parcels in India Outside the bazaar in Calcutta you übserve as you pass in, certain lean little men in loin cloths, each having a large circular basket with two handies. o One of them promptly follows you, padding along noiselessly with his bare feet, and you are half-way through the first alley before you become conscious of his presence. You tell him to go away. He does not go. You try to shoo him. as you would an over-affectionate dog. Nothing doing. ‘He is there to carry parcels for buyers In the bazaar, and it is not within the range of his undervtanding to -conceive of a foreign sahib, all done up in white clothes and shoes and pith helmet, fo be anything, else than a prodigal buyer. _ So he abides with you, and when you have bought one small brass tea. caddy and a carved box 3 by 4 inches. he insists on putting them into his basket, to bhe taken home with you. After trotting around with you for an hour or so, and padding along with you to your hotel, where the pack: ages are delivered to a house boy, he receives four annas—about 10 cents—and he is content, grae
This system prevails throughout India, where no white man is expected to carry a bundle, however small. The' carrying of burdens is the duty of the menial classes, hence the firmness with which the carriers of the bazaars maintain their particular kind of special delivery.—From the Ocean Ferry. ’ :
Moral in This Short Story ~of Absent-Mindedness A Los Angeles real estate dealer, in addressing a group of salesmen. said: “Explain all the documents and maxge the prospective customer read and understand them. Never let a man sign who doesn’t know exactly what he's signing. Never let a cus tomer find himself in the position of the doctor I met on my last trip to Honolulu. ' : “‘l've seen a good many changes, the man told me and added, ‘I used to be a prosperous doctor but owing to one little slip, most of my patients have deserted me. “‘What was the slip? 1 inquired. ““Well, sir,/ replied the doctor, ‘ln filling in a death certificate for a patient who had died, I did not notice that the printed form had been altered, so 1 absent-mindedly signed my name in the space headed ‘cause of death.!”—Los Angeles Times.
Peculiar Thing in Life
If you choose to represent the various parts in life by holes upon the table, of different shapes—some circular, some triangular, some squarz, some oblong—and the persons acting these parts by bits of wood of similar shapes, we shall generally find that the triangular person has got into the square hole, the oblong into the triangular and a square person has squeezed himself into the round hole. The officer and the office, the doer and the thing done, seldom fit so exactly that we can say .they were almost made for each other,—Sydney: Smith (1769-1845). - “Sketches of Moral Philosonhy.”
Martyr to Science
Dr. Auguste Marie of the Pasteur institute died in a search for a serum which would annihilate the bacillus botulinus which produces the fatal disease known as botulism. While experimenting, his left eye was touched by a drop of liquid containing bacilli botulini. = Knowing that he was doomed, he set about recording a complete story of the progress of the disease. Within a fortnight after the accident, in his laboratory he dictated the last word. He wus post: humously awarded the Medaille d’Honneur des Tpidemies, as a vietim of devotion to the cause of humanity.
- Chinese Tit-Bit ~ The Chinese regard as a delicacy the nest of the selangane of of related species of swift or swiftlet of the- Malay archipelago. It- has the shape and size of half a teacup, is attached to the rock in the interior of a cave, and has the appearance of fibrous gelatine’ or isinglass. It is composed of a mucilaginous substance secretéd by special glands, and is not, as was formerly thought, made from a glutinous seaweed.
Considerable “Explanation”
A brother and sister, six and, four years of age, respectively, spent a considerable part of each day playing together, One day their father found them sitting in little red chairs, rocking their dolls. - He inquired of them what it was they were playing and they replied “Mothers,” explaining further that they were both “widows.” “How ean that be?” asked the father, “Oh,” they said, “we’re married to dead men,”’—Pathfinder Magazine, |
