Storm Lashes Midwest = . Winter staged a realistic dress rehearsal in the midwest lashing out over six states with all the destructive agencies of a blizzard in February. Temperatures all over the central area were freezing or below. , While the midwest shook out overcoats, the west coast besieged weather bureaus with demands for relief from a heat wave that sent the mercury into the 90’s. Yesterday was the hottest October day on the coast since 1917. The highest temperature was 96 in San Francisco. ' " Shipping on the lakes was at a standsill. One barge was reported adrift in Lake Superior and a steamer was aground off Leamington, Ont. iLa.ke Michigan on its worst rampage in 37 years quieted down somewhat l'today. : -

Paul M. Waterman 28 of ‘Elkhart an‘ automobile agency ‘owner was found‘ guilty of forgery and .conspiracy to commit a felony by a jury in the superior court at Elkhart Tuesday afternoon after a deliberation of three hours. His brothér Howard Waterman will go on trial on the same charge during the November term of court. - The trial of Paul Waterman consumed three days in the superior court. He was charged with having forged the name of Elmer Garberick of Bristol to a conditional sales contract on which he borrowed $865 from the Na‘tional Discount corporation. Water‘man admitted "having signed Garberick’s name, but claimed he did sc with the knowledge of the Discount corporation representative. o

Charles Davis of Goshen was given a sentence of 30 days at the penal farm and fined $lO and costs, in the Goshen city court by Clell E. Firestone city judge Tuesday afternoon. He was found guilty of public intoxication this being the second charge to be brought against him. He had served a sentence of sixty days for assault and battery.
