et 30 Days At Penal aFrm, Two members of the Bloomington police force were awaiting transporta tion to the state penal farm today to serve 30 day sentences for' using “third degree’” :methods in questioning Lewis Smith, 19.. ' The men are Captain Everett Anderson and Patrolman Homer Terril. Anderson was fined $5O and Terril $25. Scott Davis a patrolman also accused was acquitted. Sheriftf Ray Stephens planned to take the convicted men to prison today. -
' Horse Is Anchored: ) A- horse hitched to a school hack driven by Harley Wilson who cairies children to the Madison school west of Wakarusa caught his hoof beftween th# rail and planking at a railroad crossing Friday afternoon. The horse could not he released by the drviver, but an u})proaching freight train was stopped and train crew members with crowbars succeeded in freeing the animal. s

H. G. Eshelman, George and Clarence Bucher are home from Montana where they purchased lambs for feeding purposes—about 30 carloads lln all. The Buchers will feed about 1,200, Mr. Eshelman will feed 900 and enough more to make about 3,000. in all will -he fed in that immediate territory. =Of the lambs purchased several thousand went to points west.

Towunship Trustee Dan Rumbaugh of Orange township reports ' that he has employed an additional teacher for the primary room at Rome City, who began her duties Monday morning. “I just had to do somethin” said Mr. Rumbaugh. ‘‘as some of those primary pupils only .got to recite once every other day and that wasn't getting: them anywhere.” .

Leon M. Burke 40 South Bend; ind., was killed and Walter Morozek South Bend and A. F. Otto Milwaukee were injured seriously when struck by a train at a crossing in Milwaukee. The three victims were riding in a truck owned bv Burke and Morozek. .

Dr. E. S. Shumaker superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League in Indiana was reported gradually growing weak er. Dr. Shumaker is suffering from an incurable malignant tumor at his Indianapolis home. - DRSS e el

Anton Grabner 18 of Niles Mich, suffered a- concussion of the brain and other injuries Saturday night when a street car left the tracks on a curve at South Bend and struck an automobile driven by Grabner. !

Chauncey Shun %0 years old who had wandered away from .the Elkhart county infirmary last Wednesday was found in Elkhart Saturday afternoon, and returned to the farm.

Motor Co. to Build Airplanes
~ The Auburn Automobile Co., which recently introduced the Cord, first commercial front-wheel drive car, announces plans to build a new aircraft engine and a tri-motored plane botfi to have reasonable cost. Production of the motors will start about Nov. 1 in“the Williamsport (Pa.) piant of the company and a new $250,000 tactory is planned for Connersville Ind., where the airships wilil be built. . L. Cord Auburn president is himself a pilot and all three plants of the company have modern airports. -

The New York Central railway was made defendant in a $lO,OOO damage suit filed by Mrs. Hazel Cox widow of Isaac Cox. Isaac Cox was killed by a New York Central train last April 24 at a crossing east of Elkhart. ¢

When the sultan of Zanzibar or dered clothes made in a hurry while in London recently. it was brought out the English claim the quick-tailoring record of the world. In 1811, it is related, wool was clipped from two Southdowns at five o’clock one morning, washed, cured, spun and woven, the cloth *“scoured” and dyed, and a complete suit made from it se that a Berkshire barenet wore it at his dinner at 6:30 o’clock that evening. By his quick work the tailor won a wager of $5,000. ;
The Naval observatory says that the number of stars in the whole celes tial sphere bright enough to be seen by the average eye on a clear, moon less night has been estimated to b= between six and seven thousand. As one-half of this number lies below the horizon, and ‘haze near the horizon hides many more, the total number visible at any one place cannot greatly exceed 2,500. The blended light of many million stars in the Milky wa) may be seen, but not the individual points of light.

Grain (Crops Covered
“Grain crops are essential to practically every farm in Indiana, whether théy be grown sotely for grain to be marketed or as feed for livestock” is the statement of F. E. Robbins, professor of agronomy at Purdue university. This autumn agricultural short course at the university which opens today and last until December 19 offers a course of study which deals with the culture impx'bvement, judging and grading of the important grain crops of the state. o Prospective and active farmers who seek to improve farm practices and rural conditions will be interested in a program of intensive instruction designed to shorten the road to success. The Purdue eight weeks course in agriculture which are offered at the time of year when there is the least farm work to be done are planned to make the students thoroughly familiar with fhe modern practical facts of agriculture essential to successful production and profitable marketing. : g o

- The man fatally wounded on the state capitol steps by Lieutenant Charles Bridges state police last Friday has been identified as Charles Breece, alias Jackson ~Wylie, alias Charles Jackson 28 a former convict. His identity was traced through finger prints and photographs from Detroit.

A life of Albert J. Beveridge is to be written by Claude G. Bowers, New York journalist, it was learued today. The book wili deal with a history of the pi’ogressivé movement with which Beveridge was closely linked. :
