Adjournment May Be Delayed By Insurgents if Watson Fails to Placate "~ Progressives |

Congress today confronted a situation in the senate contest over restriction of tariff revision which many leaders regarded as threatening to thrwart the plan for a summer vacation. : = £

The issue was drawn on the resolution of Senator Borah Republican Idaho to restrict the tariff changes to rates affecting agricultural and relatell products together with an amend ment by Senator J(jmeS of Washington assistant Republican leader to bring industrial products which have been “depressed” in recent years by increasing ‘competitive» imports within the scope of the limitatiurns pProposed. : o

Senator Watson of Indiana the Republican leader has taken command of the opposition to the Borah proposal but members of both groups conceed today that itg adoption was possible if- not probable. The Indiana genator is counting for_his main support from the group of Republican regulars whe lined up with him in suuport of President Hoover's opposrtion to the export debenture plan of farm relief but some of these already have {islosed their preference for the Borah restrictions. :

Senator Norris Republican Nebraska meanwhile has worked out a revised export debenture proposal as an- amendment to the tariff bill. To prevent speculation in debenture certificates - which woi_ul(l be _ issued to farmers exporting surplus crops he woud provide for 'th_eir redemption by the treasury at 98 cents 6n the dollar.

Chevrolet , b S .~ What is believed to be a new record for the sale of used cars in the United States was established in May when the nation-wide Chevrolet dealer organization sold 157,624 used cars. This was 4n' addition. to the record volume of new car business which alsoe soared to a new level during the month. e ;

" In commenting on the achievement, Chevrolet factory officials point out that it was made péssi})[e through the tremendous amount of public confidence that has been built up by Chevrolet dealers through the general policy of offering for sale only dependable merchandise. They explain that through the widespread use of the red tag “with an 0. K. that counts” prospective used car buyers can be assured that every wvital part of the car has been properly reconditioned and put in shape to offer thousands of miles of unused transportation. Compared with- the corresponding month of a year ago, when 118,195 used cars were sold, the i!:\y 1929 total showed '‘a gain of more than 33 percent. It also outstripped the ;\pl‘il 1929 record of 133,887 used cars.

- In accomplishing this feat, the Chevrolet dealer -organization sold an average of 6.063 used cars a day during the 26 business days of the month This was at the rate .of more than 600 cars an hour and more than ten cars a minute, The May proof demonstrates ‘that it pays to sell only dependable merchandise officials point out.
