The democratic -~ state committee expended $115,133.99 iy the Indiana 1928 compaign, according to a report filed with the Marion county clerk. " 'The report revealed that the total expenditure was more than double that of 1924. Four years ago the democrats spent $56,379. v . Receipts of the committee this vear were $108,170.12, of which $65,500 wag donated by. the national democratic committee; the report said. Disburse ments of the total receipts were $105,2 000 and the outstanding indebtedness amounted to $10,133.97. ' " According to the report the democratic state committee had approximately 400 workers in the state, in addition to salaried organizers. $41,169.35 was distributed te county organizations by the state committee. Pleads Not Gullty. ! Edward J. Gulick, of Elkhart, who was arrested several weeks ago in connection with the death of Twila Cline, one-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cline of LaGrange, pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the LaGrange circuit court and furnished a bond of §55,000 for his appearance for trial. . :
Mr. Gulick’s attorueys will file a motion for a change of venue. Mr. Gulick was driving on U, S.-highway No. 20 five miles east of LaGrange, when his car struck the Cline auto in which ' the child was seated. The Cline car was upset and the baby’s chest was crushed. -
Prisoner is Paroled.
Henry Romine, an 82-year-old Civil war veteran who has been serving a life sentence at the Indiana state prison, Friday was granted a parole by the board of prison trustees. He will go to the Indiana soldiers’ home at Lafayette for the remainder of his life. He has served sixteen yvears in prison. He was convicted of the kill~ ing of two men at North Vernon. His trial was held at Columbus. : ~ For several years Indiana governors have paroled Romine so that ha ‘might. attend the annual encampment ?qufl the G. A. R. He has always attended the encampments unguarded ’and returned to the prison.
Morton Named Secretary.
Gaylord Morton, audit clerk in the state auditor’s office Friday was appointed to serve as secretary of Govj! Jackson during the remainder of the governor’s term. Morton takes the place of Pliny H. Wolfard who recently was appointed a member of the state tax hoard, effective Decem ber 1. g :
