Attorney General Gilliom’s prosecution of E. S. Shumakekr, secretary of the Indiana Anti-saloon League amounts to pergecution and does not seem warranted by the facts. It all came about when the attorney general was criticized by Shumaker when he confessed to buying liquor for a sick sister. Shumaker pounced upon the incident likea bee on a posy, an act which Gilliom resented. When the anti-saloon league secretary in an official report charged that members of the Indiana supreme court
make decisions favorable to the liquor interests Gilliom seized upon the opportunity to get even. He had Shumaker cited for contempt and when the hearing was had before the supreme court the secretary was found guilty fined $5OO and sentenced to serve sixty days on the penal farm. Shumaker accompanied by the sheriff of Marion county, went to the farm and registered as an inmate, serving one day when pardoned by Governor Jackson. The fine of $5OO was xjaid by friends. Then Gilliom filed a *tipulation in the supreme court, dehying the power of the governor to grant a pardon in a case of contempt and asking that Shumaker bhe compelled to serve the sentence. Shumaker has been cited to appear before the supreme judicial tribunal

‘A writer in the Goshen Newss Times has discovered that there is a royal ruler left in Europe who is called by his .subjects *“The Good.” He s Prince John of Liechtenstein who recently completed the 70th year of his Teign over 11,000 subjects. The Prince himself is 88 years old. His little principality is 250 years older than the Unted States. It lies between Austria and Switzerland and appears to have survived the stresses of war happi'ly,enough. Prince John is the only monarch today ruling over a country populated by German stock. Rulers of other and larger nations felicitated him on his long and kindly reign and his own loyal “household” —which is what he calls his subjects ——sent /many affectionate - greetings. John The Good may go on reigning until he is 100 vears cldeif he lives so long and no democracy will begrudge him his little monarchy or thg love and good will he has won from his people. and their neighbors. «

‘ Farm Bureau News. | Those that attended the Farm Bureau school at Kendallyville from Perry township Nov. 15th and 16th -were Willard Slabaugh, A. N. Claudon Lavi Chiddister, Carl Schlemmer and O. V. Borger and they are very ‘much concerned that the farmers of Pérry township should know of some of the things that they learned that are of vital interest at this time. They learned that the farm bureau has grown until it is now in yolumne the fourth - largest concern doing business in the State, doing a business of approximately one million dollars per week, and that within the next two years will be the largest iconceru in the state.
That the purchasing department has forced the price of fertilizer down so that the average reduction amounts to §12.12 per ton and that we may expect another reduction of $l.OO per ton due to reduced freight rates brought about by the Farm Bureau, This saving on fertilizer alone to Indiana farmers amounts to $17,452,800 in the last 6 years. . | That all feeds purchased thru the farm bureau are made on open formula and_that an inspector is main tained to see that ingredients as specified by the open formula go into farm bureau feeds. Without inspection ‘the buyer has no guarantee of quality better than from a cloged formuls.. - o e
That ip the oil department a substantial saving can be made by buying thru this department. Lubricating oils of the same quality having an asphalt base can' be bought for 27¢ per gallon in drum lots and with the quality guaranteed to be the equal to our well advertised brands. . That in the matter of closer seeds for 1929 seeding we have this information: That 25,000 bushels of Oregon seéd that is worse than worthless is enroute to this territory and that it will be offered to the farmers at a price around $20.00 per bushel. This seed when sown. here’ 1n Indiana will. winter kill 79 'to 90%. Be sure you are not getting some of this seed. It is grown in this country 8o you have no governmental protection. - Farm Bureau will perhaps be able to trace a large portion of this seed to destination and discourage the handling of it. i That our tax and legislative department is getting some real results for the farmers as evidenced by the fact that they were able to get the State Tax Board to order an average Teductionp on farm valuations in Noble County of 15%, and that we are promised another reduction of 109% reduction promised will amount to two thirds that amount. That this department intends to watch all budgets and expenditures made 'by officials that handle the farmer's tax money. That the Farm Bureau is going fo fight against the ' redistribution of representation of the state and in that way save 12 representatives to ‘the rural districts rather than loss them to the cities. .
That the Farm Bureau is going to carry an educational program (o -the farmers with reference to the incomsg ftax questiop that will come up again to he voted upon by the people with the idea in mind that persons with large incomes but without tangible taxable property may be made to bear their share of the taxes thus relieving the farmer of a part of this burden. / &
That the Farm Bureau has assisted the dairy interests of certain parts of Indiana to organize for production and distribution so that they are now getting a price of 65¢ per popund for their butter fat.
That the Farm Bureau co-operated with the farmers of Montgomery county in -establishing an oil and gasoline bulk station from the operation of which they were able to show a net profit for six months and two weeks of $5,835.71. That the Farm Buwmeau is in a position to do much more for the farmers of Noble county if they will but avail themselves of the machinery already set-up or that can be set up for their use. These men believe that many more farmers would be- interested in the benefits to be obtained thru the Farm Bureau if they were acquainted with the workings of the organization. - Pay your Banner subscriptions.
