Party Receives Great Ovation As It Boards Admiral’s Barge For Trip To Battleship - SAN PEDRO, Calif.. Nov. 19—U.P)-; Herbert Hoover, president-elect of the United States sailed from San Pedre California Monday on the U. S. S. Maryland on a venture which will carry himm to the key cities and countries of Latin America, The Maryland under the escort of six ~destroyers and carrying the 35 official members of the entourage, weighed anchor for _Nicaragua at 11:07 a. m. , ' The first stop .will be made 'at Corinto: where Ho‘&vvr is expected to make the first official announcement of the reason for his trip. He already has indicated it ad a “‘good will” gesture to Central and South America. The Hoovers acknowledged a tre-
mendous ovation with nods as they walked between lines of sailors from their special train to the admiral’s barge. About 15,000 spectators were on hand. . ‘ . 'The cheering send-off ot his townspeople of Palo Alto was interrupted rudeiy by a reminder of recent ilifeeling against the United States in the first country he is scheduled to visit, tNicaragua. Just before his special train pulled out, three young men carrying banners criticizing this country’s Nicaraguan policy, attempted to stage a demonstration but were checked forcibly by “United States secret service men who rushed them away from the rear of the train.
" The president-elect indicated that he would disregard the demonstration at Palo Alto station. The republican leader sent the following telegram to Mayvor Hodge of the northern city: ' “I do not believe the trivial demonstration at the station last night was anything more than a. foolish college boy prank and it should not be taken seriously. S The whole world knows that Presi-dent-elect Hoover is going on an unprecedented tour of Latin-America, but only a few places that he will visit have been anuounced-—Corinto, Nicaragua, the canal zone; Lima Peru; Valparaiso and Santiage, Chile; Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro, with stops also §cheduled at Mexico City and Havana, Henry P. Fletcher ambassador to Italy and personal representative of President Coolidge on the trip who will joip the f)avty today at San Pedro i§ expected to announce such other countries Hoover will visit as have been determined. Lambda Chi Omeba Meeting Members of the Lambda Chi Omega Sorority held a business meeting Monday night at the home of Gladys Billman. Officers for the coming ' vear were elected as follows: President, Gladys Billman; vice president® Helen Smith; secretary, Mary Helen Mentzer treasurer, Marian Lake; Reporter and historian, ' Dorothy Slabaugh; social chairman, Hannah Kline; sargeant-at-arms Mary Kline, Plans for a Christmas party for Ligonier kiddies were also made. After the meeting Miss Billman took her guests to the Swan restaurant for lunch.

Held on Larceny Charge.
George and Jacob Greenwalt, brothers, were arrested at ‘their homes in Kendallille by Chief of Police Orrie Sawyer, and sheriff's deputies from Defiance county O_hio. The two men are charged with stealing more than $1,400 worth of seed from the firm ef Koubel & Levy at Mark Center, Ohio, according to Chief Sawyer. 2

Ben Smith Feund Guilty in Whitley Circuit Court of Attempted Blackmail on Banker
- Ben Smith 37 tormerly of South Whitley was sentenced one to 5 years in the state prison at Michigan City late Monady afternoon in the Whitley circuit court on his plea of guiity before Judge Arthur F.’ Biggs to a charge of attempting to blackmail Harvey Kreider president of the Farmers State bank of - Soyth Whitley. Smitly was arrested when a cousin George Archer confessed -to the plot and deciared Smith had ‘written the ' blackmailing notes . which threntened Kreider and members of his ,meiiy'wii.:x death last June i he failed to place at designated places $7.770 in cHrrency. ' Smith broke jail a few weeks ago after a jury in his first trlal had disagrecd. He was later recaptured and in the meantime his wife was incarcerated for her admissions that she had smuggled saws to her husband. Mrs. Smith was given a suspended sentence today of 2 to 21 vears in the state prison. S :

The supper and social time at the church Tuesday evening were greatly enjoyed. Another one will be held aftér the holidays. The Social Hour and the Ladies Aid Society managed the affair and all thanks are due them. '

Meroney of the Stansbury stores died in .2 South Bend hospital Monday morning twentyfour hours after he was injured in an automobile accident near Elkhart. The familx moved to Elkhart about eight - vears ago when Meroney took the positiop of fireman in the Buecher band instrument factory. . - } “Meroney was sitting in ‘an auto at theside of the ncgth river road four and one-half miles west of Elkhart Sunday morning when it was struck by a Chicago-Detroit passenger bus. Mystery surrounds the reasons . for Meroney's being on the road at 5:30 o’clock as he had not reported home from work since he quit work at-5:30 o'clock Saturday night. The ‘St. Joseph county coroner today held a post-mortem in cannection with an invest,i\gation. ’ According 'to the report given South Bénd police following the crash Meroney was alone in the parked auto.’ There were no lights on the car. Meroney was unable to give any facts and it was pot until 11 o’clock Sunday morning that his identity was learned. At that time he regained consciousness. e

D. Straus. - The house was beautifully decorated in the large and baby chrysanthemums and each table was lartistically graced with the = baby chrysanthemums in modernistic designed vases. The gorgeous five course dinner capryiug the color scheme of pink and green was perfect in every detail. Ruby of this city to take place at high noon at the bride’s home Thanksgiving day. Mr. Ruby is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ruby of Cromwell and for the past year has been a very i)ppular clerk in the Carney clothing store in this city. Mier. - It will be noted that the above named officers and directors are all prominent in_ the business affairs of Ligonier and doubly insure the stability of the new American State Bank and guarantee its success. The new bank will -occupy the whole lower floor of the C(itizens— Bank Building at the Corner of-Cavin and Third styeets.
The business of the Mier State and Citizens Bank will be continued in the new bank without confusion or interruption. - Gl

~ Fans to Hear Ligonier Game. ~_Arrangements have been made whereby Butler basketball fans who are unable to follow the team will thave an opportunity to hear the But-ler-Ligonier game to be played at Ligonier on Friday night November 23. . ~ Through the courtesy of the Richards’ Battery and Electric Shop at Butler loud speakers will be installed in the High school gymnasium there. jA play-by-play account will be given from the Ligonier gymnasium by telephone to the Butler gymnasium where the sound will be -amplified many times before going thru the loud speakers so that anyone in the building will be able to hear clearly the exact account of the game as-it is being played here. o ‘Shews Little Improvement Mrs. Michael Hire today received word from a Fort Wayne hospital where she is being treated that her gister Mrs. W.
