: Automokiles ifor Export. - Automobile dealers at this time are paying special heed, in their surveys of 1829 market trcnds, io the export aspects of the industry, conscious of the fact that oversea: tradc lhias been growing consistently until it stands today third in th elist of American gxports = with a wvaluation of four hundred and six millions of dollars.
- This is regarded as significant, coming as it does with the industry entered upon the final quarter of what promises to he the greatest year in the history of the domestic market with no decrease in home demand expected during 1929. | Far from viewing with complacency the gigantic forward strides made in foreign markets since 1921, the consensus of expert opinion adheres to the view that the export business is still an infant—a gilant infant which promises to achieve a mighty growth. Re habilitation of Europe, the betterment of road conditions all over the world, the establishment of American credit systems abroad and the continuous improvement of American manufacturing methods are among the reasons assigned for a view of the foreign market that is decidedly optimistic. L | ' . Last week, H. J. Klingley, general sales manager of the Chevrolet Motor company, world leader in domes.tic and foreign sales, issued a statement in which he predicted that Amierim will be exporting 1,000,000 cars annually within the next few years. Mr. Klingler madé his prediction ful* ),ly aware that the total number of Amlerican cars shipped abroad for sale in 1927 was 460,305 and coginizant too, of the fact that foreign trade barmiers are. not likely ever to be obliterated. - -l ’
) Explaining /is forecast, he said: ‘‘One million American made cars will be shipped overseas and sold in the next few years. Today there are upwards of 29,505,475 motor vehicles iin the world, and of this number 23 million are in use in the United States. I feel that this is altogether out ”of’ proportion. The United States has only about 1-20th of the world’s population and only a fraction of its habitable land. Yet it owns 80 per cent of all motor vehicles in the world. ~ “General Motors Export, applying American methods of manufacture, distribution and credit, has gone a long way in the last few years to make the world motor minded. For instance, Chevrolet cars and trucks are now being sold in 104 countries from Icelend in the north to New Zealand in the south, and each one of these cars is serving as an individual ambassador of the superiority of the American product. Each is educating the world at large -of the advantages of economical transportation that cannot be surpassed. ' “During the first six months of this year General Motors Export reports the sale of 57,808 Chevrolet passénger cars and 50,642 trucks as compared ‘with 39,594 passenger cars and 32,799 trucks for the first six months of 1927 This increase in the export trade has been :reflected generally. Figures for the first eight months covering the entire American export field show an increase of 36 per cent over 1927.
