Five Person Injured.

Five persons - were injured and a Whippet —sedan completely demslish¢d when it crashed with a large truck and trailer, loaded with eight tons of piping, two miles west of Bristol ;(t, 4:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. One person is suffering severe injurics, while the other four are hadly: cut and bruised = = x 5

The truck owned by the Zetfern Motor Truck Co., of .South Bend, :was headed east when the driver, -Oscar Brenneman, of South Bend, allowed the heavy vehicle to “shimmy” "and cut across the road, side-swiping the small, sedan_and tearing- its top ompletely off. - : Mrs. Amanda Brindley of Bristol, the most seriously injured of the five, received two—broken ribs, bad—cuts and bruises about the hody and pnf\'sb ble internal injuries. - 2

Shumaker is Ready.

Although“expecting “no decision until after election”, E. S. Shumaker is ready to take his Indiana supreme court contempt care “into,f federal court” -if the state court decides

“against” him again, Shumaker said in an interview at Muncie. “The Indi-

ana supreme court certainly will not decide my case until after election,” Shumaker was quoted as saying, for one of the ‘wet’ judges is up for re-election. I have 1o idea what the decigion will be when =it~ d6es come.”

Kendallyville Man Hurt.

D. C. Wilson, 84, prominent business man of Kendallville, was seriously injured ' Monday night when he was struck by an automobile driven by Harvey Roush of that city. 1 Mr. Wilson is suffering from a concussion of the brain and larcerations about the face and body. He was unconscious when taken to the Lakesidae hospital. e

The residence was formerly (jccupie(l by Ira I2n'yeart, a recluse, who was killed two yvears ago by an interurban ‘car.. Enyveart lived -alone and. occupied his spare winter time with painting futuristic designs in 'vivid colors over the ceilings and walls -of his home. The work was artistically odd, but disclosed unusual skill..

- In some localities there has been a wrong impréssion gone out relative to how to vote a “scratched ticket;” In Indiana there is only'one way to vote a scratched ticket and that is to leave the circles or party emblenis entirely alone, and mark each name for which wvou-wish to vote. There are

some states"in which one—may vote a SCl‘atCheMflfii’—l')S/'—{)firkil’gg‘ in the irele and then marking the candidates on the other tickets, but Indiana is not one of them. . In this state there are only two wavs of marking a Dballot. You must either vote a straight ticket, or leave the circle ‘alone and vote for. each "candidate separately. Woeman -is Missing.

Auburn county and’ Lty ~officials joined residents of Newville township in a search for -Mrs.. Mike Haupt of near Newville, who disappeared Saturday morning. - g

*Mrs. Haupt is thought by a number of persons to. have committed suicide by jumping into the St. Joseph river, but the officers are iinclined’to think she is hiding out some place and is alive. !

Heavy Fire Loss. A~ $30,000 loss was sustained by the

McNeal Gravel Wash Co., at Wolcottville _Monflay morning hetween three and four o’'clock, when fire of an unknown oerigin destroyed all the buildings. The local fire department responded, but the. fire . had gathered too much headway before discovered.

Vandals Ruin Auto of Hunters. Two Plymouth nimreds were the victims of the nieanest vandals in the county’s history, accordingf to | local authorities, while the hunters were stalking game cn a farm about five miles scuth of there. The hunters, Clyde Prie and William Dimmitt, had parked their car by theside .of the rcad after obtaining permission from the farmer to hunt in his field. ‘ e When they returaned o their: car they were horrified to find that some ore had smashed tho glass of their hecadlights, taken out their bulbg aud ground them in the dirt, had let the air out of all of their tircy, and with a_pair off pliers had twisted the gasolilie feed pipe line so as to make it ueelpss. - - o : ‘The two hunters said they knew of no enemies. They have offered a re{wurd for any information leading to th 2 identity of the vandals.

Frank ‘Unrue - Suicide Victim.

-Despondent over ‘ill health, Frank Unrue, 59, of Millershurg, took his own life sometime Saturday afterioon or night by sending a bullet from an old type revolver through his barin, His body propped in an upright positicn against a wook-box was found Sunday morniné by relatives who became alarmed at his absence. Coroner. W. A. Stauffer, of Elkhart, calléd to conduct an inquest into the death, returned a. verdict of ’suicide. He had been dead several hours when found. e

Believes Husband Dead.

_lfranklin. Tucker, alleged .victim of Indiana’s “corpseless’ murder” case, is dead so far as his wife is concerned, although hi shody has never becn found. The- wife, Mrs. Lillian C. Tucker, and Perey C. Shoeniaker, a Warsaw mechanic, are on a honeymoon, following their marriage at Columbia City Friday by Mayor Lloyd S. Chouch. : S

8,000 Bushels of Apples

Many persons of this community hava recently visited the apple orchard of Dr. A| E. Eagles west of Wolcottville former Chicago dentist, An eight thousand bushel crop this year proves that the dream of the Chicago dentist to get away from.the city and become a successful apple grower has materialized. . = The orchard was planted on a ridge sloping toward a small lake so that the cold air runs off like water and the orchard escapes fm?tsih_at other wise would damage the' trees. None of the trees in the orchard is over eight' years old. There are 3,000 trees in the orchard ‘at present and this year they were nearly all loaded with fruit to such an extent that the limbs touched the ground. This vear's crop: is the largest to date. although 5,000 bushels of apples were picked last yvear. . i

Dr. Eagles has planted alfalfa in his orchard which is used as a mulch to preserve moisture and in putting nitrogen ‘into the- soil. Standard spraying methods are used, the .trees being sprayed six times this Season, At présent one man can spray the orchard in four or five days.

“Doctrine of Atonement” was the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all churches of Christ Scientist on Sunday October 21. : . i _ Among the citations which comprised the Lesson—Sermqh was 'the following from the Bible: “Speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaghing-us that, denj{'ing ungodliness and wordly lusts we should live soberly righteously and godly, in this, present world“ (Titus 2:1. 11} 19). 1 e

: $7,000 for Loss of Eye . For the loss of an eye, Monroe Martin, has been awarded $7,000 by a Miami circuit court jury -in his suit against the Vandalia railroad company. A piece of steel broken from a pick the plaintiff was using while in the company's employ struck him in the eye. He alleged the pick was defective. e B - | .
