Now and 65 Years Ago.
There are few living today who witnessed the waik of the noted Westcn, the pedestrian on his first trip from New York to Chicago. He was compelled to walk 100 miles during any three days specitied. There were no autdmobhiles to lead the van at that time but one pair of large Morgan bred horses made the entire trip. : . By comparison Weston's memorable walk was a tame affair as compared with the present ocean-to-ocean running race. There was no hold-up game attached to his western march, He simply made the best time possible within himself, without any specified stopping places. The interesting part of his walking was that in nearly every village of any size was a walker in tne making who would start out with Weston for a given distance and very often would out walk Weston.
John Casey and Tommy Gilmore of our city both had aspirations to be a longer distance than 20 miles was attempted more especially little Tommy When Weston passed through Ligenier over 100 on horseback and in wagons followed him to Goshen, Capt. Braden leading the van on a prancing steed. He always enjoyed placing himself in”a conspicuous place.
There was no vanguard of promoters and gleaners leading the van of Weston’s as vou saw today. Towns and cities were not held-up for so much per night's stay or so much for passing through the Main street, South Bend and Elkhart both refused to be heldup with the result that the runners passed south of both cities, much to the credit of both cities. Gogshen being the home of one of the
runners out of courtesy they passed through our city. Ligonier was taken in it is revoried io the tune of 3500. ‘ S 5 ; What course they will take 1o counteract their donation is a problem. All in all the confract of two noted events shows the trend of the times as to the mode of extracting moncy out of the public to fill the pockaie of promoters at the hands oi boys of limited means.. —G. W. K. in Goshen News Times. . Ligonier residents did not contribute $5OO. They put up $lOO.
