meeting at LaGrange that eyening | “1 have heard Senator Watson and ‘Senator Robinson and "Will Hays and Governor Jackson speatk of the honor of our country with a dir2loy of passionute concern marked even by a tremule in their voices. What is our country’s honor? Let us have done for a momeni with phrases while we seek to comprehend the actual sentiment which those phrases are intended to mean. Is our country’s honor merely something thay may be insulted by other nations and so furnish
a cause for going to war? Or.is it something that may be insulted within our own bhoundaries by hicksters in our national resources utilizing the very instrumentalities of free institutions for their personal advantage and against the common good? | ‘I am convinced that there can be no graver insult to our nation’s honor than that which breaks the confidence of a public in their institutions of freedom. This very -campaign is a call to the lovers of liberty to vindicate their country’y honoy. It is a call demanding a service as important as that which might be required on a battlefield. The bhanks and shoals of time are strewn with the wreckage. of free governments which came to their ruin by forces within. History will amply demonstrate that the most serious dangers to free governments are not to be found in the threats bf over-whelming external focrgs. There is one way by which those internal dangers;‘ may always be diveried. “Eternal vigilance is the price of #¢iberty” not partisanship that sets party victory above good even when it is notorious that the party has become the instrument of vicious and corrupt forces and infiuences. i “The present Republican party organization is not an appropriate instrumentality through which to express one's devotign to the ideals of Abraham Lineoln. Even to suggest that it might be, with the county chair man of the largest county in the state under indictment with the state chairman under indictment and with the long list of indictments and convictions of office holders it h:x(’iapiaoed in ‘cffice, impresses one as a kind of blasphemy . Abraham Lincoin when he found that the party to which he had given his allegiance no longer stood for the ideals to which hiis allegiance came tirvst leit the party and formed a new one . If hé were alive | today his clear insight would lead him into the Demoeratic party which has been firm in its adherence to those fundamental priuciples on which the public good depends. In these tumaltious recent vears in Indiana ft has kept itself in a positicn where asl may turn to it. Indiana may confidently look to the Demoecratic party io Ilift it out of the s!ough‘*of political despondency t othe solid path of honesty and integrity in’public service.” _ For County Clerk 1 wish to arnounce my candidacy for the nomination of Clerk of the Noble Circuit Court subject to ile will of the voters of the Demceratie primary May 8 1928, | ~ HARRIETT MILLER, Albion 1 : Gabw . Dismiss Charges
Charges of burglary that have been pendng fo ra couple of years against James E. Remington of South Whitley were dismissed by Special Judge I. H. Wrigley of the Noble circuit court Tuesday afternoon. The charges were bronght by Robert E. Hicks of the Hicks Publishing Company of South Whitley who alleged that Mr. |Remington had stolen certain valuable papers from him. . : . According to W. H. Kissinger who represented Mr. Remington an agreement had existed between Prosecutor C. A. Lincoln and attorney George 0. Compton that the charges against Mr. Remington be tried before Special Judge Emrick. When the matter came up Monday afternoon it developed that no papers had becn filed to perfect the change of Judge and Judge Wrigley then refused to surrender jurisdiction. After some argument Mr. . Compton withdrew from the case ang Mr. Remington then summoned Mr. W. H. Kissingor. A jury was empaneled Monday aiterncon and when court convened Tuesday- morning Judge Wrigley asked to see the affidavit. It was suggested that the affidavit was not good and Judge Wrigley so held. 1t was ruled that the affidavit stated simply that the defendant entered and committed a felony, instead of that he [entered with intent to commit a ifeiouy and that it was nor geod as a larceny affidavit because the value of %'the papes taken was not stated. The case was dissmissed and Mr. Reming- , ton released. He had been out on bond. { The case was venued to Noble county from Whitley county. ; !
