To be preferred among hundreds’ of his shipmates because of ‘general all-round excellence has fallen to the lot of Thomas M. Roush a Noble county boy in the United States 11avy,1 who has beem selected as the honor man of Company 20. This recognition has comne to the young recruit because of the way he has applied himself to his studies and the excellent spirit he has shown while living in company with others preparing to become a “man 'o wars’ man.’ Roush who is at the_ Great Lakes * Naval- Training station was born January 19 1909 at Pierceton, Ind,, and completed his high school studies a{ Wolf Lake. He enlisted December 8 1827 at which time he was employed by a road construction.company. His primary reason for enlisting wasito learn the medical profession. The father, mother and three sisters of the young sailor arc all residents of Washington township. Booze Runners Are Heid. Carl Hooker and Amos Combs both of Sturgis Mich., are in LaPorte coun ty today under bonds of -1,500 eacl on charges of transperting intoxicating liquor. Both are 19 years old. With a girl Lena Christner 17 saic to be from Three Rivers Mich., th: two voung men were arrested Saturday in a restaurant. The girl was released from custody by police after being questioned. = In the car in which the trio wa: riding the officers found nearly 75 gallons of grain alcohol. Hookel testified he paid $240 for the liquor. * Hanes Loses C(ar. He reported the matter to the police but has not heard anything about it. The car had been parked on Bar street near the Y. M. C. A. Arnie Geiger Arrested. Arnie Geiger, Noble county farme: arrested on charges of writing a fraudulent check, was arraigned in the city court at Columbia City Pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined 5 and costs. The check was fol $2.35 and was given to the Yontz & - Son grocery in Columbia City. Geiger " was unable to pay the fine and is being held in the Whitley county jail : Nearby Deaths. Bowman iauditor of s@ate credits Kosciusko county with having both the largest and deepest lakes in Indiana. Lake Wawasee with an area of 3,528 acres, is -the largest lake. Lake Maxinkuckee with an area of 1,854 acres is second; Bass lake with 1,318 acres is fourth; Bear lake with 1,149 acres is fifth and Sylvan lake with 1,100 acres is sixth. Tippecanoe is the deepest lake having a maximum depth of 123 feet. Wawasee Oliver and Adams lakes are tied for second place with a maximum depth of 91 feet. There are 200 lakes in the states 59 of which range in size from 3,528 acres of water down to 202 acres. The total water area in Indiana is 209 square miles which comprises fourfifths of one per cent of its surface. All of the lakes of importance are located in the northern part of the state and Kosciusko stands out as first. Grave of Unele Sam Is Found The burial place of Samuel Wilson the original Uncle Sam of song and story has been found in Chapel cemetery near Merriam Noble county. Historians throughout the nation have been searching for the correct grave of Uncle Sam. = The Samuel Wilson tombstone shows that he died March 7 1865 and zives his age-as 100 years and 3 days at the time of death. . ~ Hurt In Seventy-Foot Fall ~ Three men were serfously injured one probably fatally ‘'when a scaffold from which they were shingling the roof of a barn on the Isadore Badiac farm eight miles north of Fort Wayne collapsed at noon Monday throewing the workmen to the ground about 70 feet below. , : ; Charles Pratt 30 was the most seriously injured. His skull is fractured in several places and he is unconscious in St. Joseph's hospital. Truek and Traller Submerged. - A large truck and a trailer left the road on the Eikhart Bristol road sey eral. miles east of Elkhart at five ‘Tuesday morning and were almost -completéely submerged in about seven feet of water. The truck is owned by C. T. Sims of Chicago and was driven by H. A. Titus. Both men were in the truck at the time but both managed to escape without injury. The driver is said to have fallen asleep. - e Confesses Post Office Robbery. - Ferris Nichols 20 held in jail at Michigan City confessed Monday after noon that with a boy companion with whom he escaped from a boys’' school at Plainfield, Ind., he had robbed the post office at Cartersburg Ind.. on April 7 1925. : Nichols said he escaped from the school by swimming a river. He will be taken to Indianapolis for arraignment in federal court. ‘Warns Adums Co. Farmers A warning to Adams county fafmers to .discontinue the practice of feeding dead animals to hogs was issued by O. T. Law state food and drug inspector and Dr. Reynolds -assistant state veterinarian. ' Students Have Mumps. . Mumps have broken out among members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Wabash college. His body was found by his eleven-year-old son, Douglas Nurton when he returned homef rom school.
