In addition each was fined $l. The pair was suspected of the thefts after Hills Wright and Klein Melton discovered the meters on their cars ‘were gone. They were found in th defendants’ automobile.

Virgil Sproat 19 of Fort Wayne was sentenced to two to fourteen years at the state reformatory after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to steal an auto: mobile. Sproat had stopped Miss Willodean Arnold a Claypool school teacher and ordered her to drive him to Chicago. '

The flames were smothered by his mother and he was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital. . Tucker Resigps Bank Job | Making good his threat Horace Tucker cashier of the State Bank of Huntertown has resigned. Tucker's reason for resigning was that holdups at the bank were coming too fast for him. He was held up at the bank twice within the last few months and engaging in a gun battle recently with two of the veggs who were later captured. A. D. Green who has been arctihg as secretary of the board of difectors of the hank will be the new cashier assuming his duties today. Tucker will remain at the bank for a week or so. In the words of the court “it was an unauthorized delegation of power.” Judge Deahl presided at the hearing of the test case designated to test the constitutionality of the state tax board insomuch as the latter has power to reduce city taxes. - Holdup Nets Men $l9O | Joseph Waehlingsr a bartender at the Four Jle house east of Fort Wayne on the old Lincoln highway was shot through the leg by a bandit when he failed to obey a command to stick his hands in the air when the place was rTobbed early Thursday morning. 1 Wachlinger was taken to the Methodist hospital. The bullet struck him in the thigh, but he left the hospital after receiving treatment. He gave his address as 920 High street. Wachlinger is said to have thought the two men were playing a joke on him when they entered the place with handkerchiefs tied across their faces and guns drawn.

Fire On New Year's Day ! The house belonging to D. L. Bt'ovm'| first house north of the Vawter Park school house near the South Shore Inn on Wawasee Lake burned to the ground on Sunday afternoon aboul five o'clock. The house was occupicd by Mr. and Mrs. Anel Miller. The fire got started from a chimney and had gained such headway that the fire department which had been called did not go out to the scene of the fire. However about all of the houshold furnishings down stairs and some fruit fro mthe celiar were saved. Mr. Miller carried no insurance on the furnishings but Mr. Brown carried $1,200 on . the house. A New Tax Department A new department has been established by the Indiana Farm Bureau Federation under the head of “Taxi and Research.” There was need of such a department to study the tax situation of the state and nation that a closer touch may be had by farm leaders. Lewis Taylor Wewburgh was elected to head this new departimeut. Mr. Taylor is vice prgsident of the Indiana Farm Bureau Federation and has been active in the work since its organization. He is especial ly well qualified for the important position. Election and Reports of Officers At the first gaarterly ‘meeting of the board of directors of the Indiana Farm Bureau Federation January 2 and 3 1928 Everett Hunt Richmond was elected to the Executive Committee and Oscar W. Larm Oxford was elected in place “of Addison Drake Fairbanks. Messrs Hunt and Larm, with W. H. Settle Prosident will constitute the Executive Committee for 1628.

Fail to Find Body. Police failed to find the body of Mrs. Marie Erdman of Fort Wayne who has been missing for nearly three weeks in Delta lake in Lakeside park. ~ Police cut holes through the ice and scraped the bottom of the lake with pike poles when a person reported that a hole found in the ice several days ago might have been made by Mrs. Erdman in committing suicide. Bellef that she ended® her life is based on her attempt at suicide one -week before she disappeared. ] = s ————— Arrested For Theft of Chickens Raymond Stutgman 19 of Clinton | Elkhart county was arrested at Middlebury last night by Marshal Chris Schrock charged with the theft of eighteen chickens from the farm of Noah Miller three weeks ago. Thae {chickens were sold to a XMillersburg butcher and Stutzman’s arrest resulted from a description of him given by the Millershurg man. Stutzman was arrested about a year ago for stealing chickens and served la sentence of ninety dys at the penal | farm.
