K b s ey (< AT S B v Locate Big Still, < Deputy Sheriff Glenn Banks of Goshen and a federal prohibition officer late Thursday discovered what probably was the largest still ever found in Northern Indiana, with the excep+ tion of the one recently urjzovered near South Bend. The still found by Banks and his assistant was located in a barn near the Michigan state liree, about seven miles northwest of Elkhart. | The officers found 65 200-gallon vats filled with mash, a large number of barrels and four or five truck loads of gallon cans, coils and other equipment. The main section of the operating part of the still had been removed. .
Trapping Season Opens. .The open season for trapping fur bearing animals opened November 10, last Thursday, and will close on February 15, 1928. Noble county is a great fur bearing district and has; mary trappers. | A few years ago muskr:t sking sold for 25 eents each. Today they bring $1,50, depending on -quality. Raccon skins used to bring around $l.OO top price, now the top is $B.OO, Skunk hides ~bring arourd $2.25, whereas, a few years back they were worth only 50 cents; oppossum $1.25, compared to 30 cents; mink, top price $9.00, former price being $2. o Mosher (ets 40-Year Term. William Mosher, 21, who was caught several weeks ago at his mother’s home near Lakeville by Deputy Shesit Joseph Cunnirgham and a posse ol Michigan state police, after Mosher had escaped form the state reformatory at Lincoln Neb., has been sentenced to serve 40 years in the Nebraska prison, according to informas tion just received, : : Mosher was cornwvicted of highway robbery shortly after his escape, and forced a motorist to carry him into Tewa at the point ofa wooden gun. Hearse in Collision. . The Rohrer hearse, owned by Undertaker Chas. Rohrer of New Paris, and a Ford car drivemm hy Louis Wicker collided on Indiana avenue and Main street in Elkhart Thursday afternoon, as Mr, Rohrer was bringing the body of Mrs. R. L. Haley to the home in New Paris. No one was injured, but both cars were brought to a stop in a yard in front of a house
Elkhart City Auto Stolen. A 1926 Ford roadster owned by the city and“used by Elkhart City Electrician Jack' E. Mahan was stolen from a parking place at theside of the Municipal buildirg in Elkhart between 4 and 6 o’clock Wednesday afternoon. The car was equipped with special license plates 1-136 with a star after the number. Railway Office Changes. . J. J. Petrilla, of Wauseon, Ohio, is now New York Central freight agent for Ligorder succeeding Mr. Sewell, {L.. M. Rohn has been promoted to second trick operator to succeed Harvey Gangwer who was made station agent at Wawaka. Commissioners Record. The Noble county board of commissioners, in session last week awarded contracts in the amount of $7,880 for the purchaseof a new road and large caterpillar tractor, to be used in road maintenance work.. The contract for the scrapper was awarded to the J. D. Adams & Sons Co., of India,na-‘ polis on a bid of $l,BBO. The tractor, costing $6,000, is being purchased I£rom the Good Roads Machinery Co. of Park Plan, Pa. e Other business transacted by the commissioners included only routine matters, Theapplication of Virgil J. Jerrett, Mrs. Grace Renkenberger and Sevilla Hart, all of Wayne townshin, for admittance to Irene Byron sanatorium, were approved. The petition to reclean the Mawhorter ditch, in Elkhart township was approved. A contract was entered into with Henry Coe as janitor at the court house for the ensuing year. The James Stillinger recently constructed gravel road, in Orarge township, was accepted. Ownership of the sewerage system in the court house and county jail was transferred from the county to the town of Albion. ' '
Club House Destroyed. Fire, starting presumably from an overheated fireplace, destroyed the club house of the Kendallville Courtry Club, Inc., in the west part of that city city together with its conitents between 4 and 5 o’clock Friday morning, entailing a loss estimated between §57,000 and $B,OOO. . The loss according to the officers of the club will be only partially covered by insurance. It was stated today that insurance in the amount of $2,500 was carried on the club house and $5OO on the club house contents. Golf bags, clubs and shoes,owned by several members of the club, which had been left in the locked room, were also burned, adding considerably to the loss One member reported a loss of more than $5O in clubs, balls and shoes, Others probably had an equally heavy loss.
| Walb to Resign. ‘ Clyde A. Walb, of LaGrange, will resigny this week as chairman of the republican state organization, according to reports at Indianapolis Thursday among party leaders. He has been thehead of the state committee since Lawrence Lyons, of Brook, resigned about five years after publication of a story that he had become a member of the Ku Klux Klar, under the generalship of D. C, Stephenson, then known as the old man and now serving a life term in the state prison for murder. 3

T—— et Bourbon Man Ends Life, The body of John Melser, 81, who lived alone on his farm near Bourbon, wag found in his home Thursday afternoon by Bert Lozier, a neighbor. The agedman hadbeen shot, apparently by his own hand. Near the body . lay a discharged shotgun. | ‘Melser had been in poor health. The-‘ agedman is survived by a wife, san and daughter living i Fort Wayne.' " Quail Season Opens, The open season for quail began Thursday and continues until Deceniber 20.. Youths Disappear, L ' Louis Fick, 32 son of Michael Fick, iam'mu@ Brudi, 27, son of J. G. Brudj and Lester Byerly, 26, son of Lewis Byerly, and all residing on farms around Arcola, have been missing since Thursday night, and no trace of their whereabouts had been obtained The yourg men who are all employ ed on farms around Arcola, attended a basketball game at that place Thursday nighit and were last seen at 11:30 pm. driving toward the home of Byerley’s parents. | Harry Machon Injured. ‘ ~ Harry Machan is confined to his home, two miles southeast of LaGrange on the O, I. M. trail, suffering with six fractured ribs on theright side. - Mr. Machan fell from a load of corn fodder, Tuesday roon, striking his right side with such force that the six fractures resulted.
