i He Gets His. “I 2m through being lenient with bootleggers and from now on liguor law violators who are convicted in the city court can expect nothing but a heavy peralty. : Such was the statement made Monday morning by Mavor W. C. Auman after he had imposed the heaviest sen terjce ever given a liquor law violator in the Kendallviile city court. The penalty, $5OO fine and costs, amouwxting to $530, and a six months’ sentence at the penal farm was imposed upon Ora Woodward after he had entered a plea of guilty to violating the liquor laws. Woodward was ‘unable to pay the firp» and costs, and according to law this must be served at the penal farm at the rate of $1 per day, adding 530 days to the six months’ sentence. :

Battle With Crazed Negro Costly. The battle of Evansville’s police force with Wesley Cooksey, crazed negro last Monday night will cost the city $2,000 exclusive of hospital bills, doctor bHls and ammunition. it was indicated. A resolution that the city be asked to pay for the property damaged by gunfire and destroyed by fire in order to capture the insane negro as well as the automobile of Prentice Dillard, wrecked enroute to the scene of police, has been passed by the board of publiggésafety. ; It has been voted, however, that the nine civilians irjured by chance shots will not have their hospital expenses paid, since those people approached the scene on their own responsibility.

Banker is Arrested.

Charles Arch, lately cashier of the Ray bank, always held in high esteem was arrested at Whitehall, Mich., on a charge of embezziemerg. His bond has been fixed at $5,000, in default of which he isheld in jail at Angola. The amount of Arch’s defalcations, it is said by the Ray bank officials, totals $19,000. His fraudulent work covers a period of two years. What he did with the money is not known. when confronted with his shortage Arch transferred real estate to the value of $3,000 to the bank. The bank stockholders paid over $ll,OOO, which together with the bond of $5,000 in the American Security company, made good the loss. :

New Souree of Revenue.

Farmers of Kosciusko county this year are reaping corgiderable profit from an entirely new crop. This income comes from the oil extracted from Marestail a volunteer weed which is found in great abundance on many farms. The weed is cut like mint aryl the oil is extracted at mint stills. The extract has a market value of between §1.50 and $2:00 per pounds. The oil 'is used for medi¢inal purposes. It is reported that some farmers are also cutting smartweed and are realizing a profit from the oil which is extracted therefrom.

Truck Strikes Buggy.

William~ Badke 564, and his wife, who live on a farm near Elkhabt, suffered painful igjuries when the buggy in which they were riding was struck by a motor truck. Mrs. Badke’'s right arm was broken and she suffered a number of bruises, and Mr. Badke suffered cuts about the ‘face and arms.

Big Increase in City Cchosls.

A large increase is reported in the attendance at Elkhart eity schools this year, although most of the increase is a,ccountefd for by the recent extension of the city limits. An increase of 688 pupils is reported, making a total attendance this year of 5,681. :

Fined $lOO After All Night Ride.

~ Henry Busse of Goshen, who was arrested August 28, by Elkhart police after a wild night on the Elkhart-Mid-dlebury highway ir+ which he crashed into several autos was fined $lOO and ordered not to drive an auto for 90 days. He pleaded gullty to driving an auto while intoxicated. ‘

Top Sale Prices.

A top price of 176.50 for a -eow with—calf by side was paid last week at the Charles Sechramm public sale west of Warsaw. Schramm disposed of some fifteen fine Jerseys. Brood sows brought- $4l and $42 each.

~ Capt. John R. §mith, aged 92, civil ‘war veteran of Kendallville and well known in Ligonier, erjoyed the thrills of an airplane ride over ihs home city Sunday. :

Garrett Tax Rate Higher.

~ .The city tax levy of Garrett will be increased from 57 to 70 cents on the $lOO valuation. The constructiory of a new ‘school building and the retirement of paving -bonds are the direct cause of the increase.

A folder has been issued by the fish and game division giving a digest summary of the Indiana laws for the protection of fish, game, fur-bear-ing animals and birds, in conwnection with those of the federal government. The defendant in a $lO,OOO damage suit brought by Alonzo A. Lehmar well known farmer against William 8. Felkner prominent and wealthy Warsaw business man has filed a motion -in Kosciusko circuit court for a change of venue. The case is the out growth of an automobile ' accident west of Warsaw -about a year ago, Mr. Felkner it is charged was driving his automobile without headlighty and struck a wagon upon which Mr. Lehman was riding. Mr. Lehman claims he suffered permanent injuries,

Man Killed Near Peru.

George Vore 65 farmer and fruit raiser in Pipe Creek township Miami county was killed late yesterday when and oak tree which he and his son Commodore were felling dropped and crushed- him. :

The son had corsiderable difficulty: in removing his father’s body from under the large tree. Vore was a widower and survived by four chil» dren. : : :

Baseball Spectator Hurt.

Glenn Smith Warsaw shoe repair man was painfully injured when struck in the forehead by a basgeball bat. Mr. Smith was starding near a batter during practice .and stooped to pick up a ground ball just as the batter swung. The bat struck him squarely 'on the forehead.

All financial arrangements for the Tunney-Dempsey battle of September 22 were settled ard certified checks for. $1,000,000 Tunney’'s . purse and $450,000 Dempsey’s share were posted with the Illinois State Athletic commission. ‘
