Over “No-Smoke” Edict Althengh the Kosciusko board of trustees. tabled the resolution’ presented by Miio Strombeck trustee of Tippecance township, wnich would have bound the board not to employ a teacher who used tobacco or carried hip fiasks or women teachers who used lipsticks or wore skirts shorter than six inches below the knee, a number -of trustées are following out the Strombeck policy. And doing souhas created . a dilemma for trustee Willard East of Harricon township. ; East decided not to employ teachers who used tobacco. He employed a teacher from Rome: City as ;coach for the Mentone high school. ~Later he learned this teacher was a smoker and the trustee then stipulated that a non-tobacco clause De inserted in his contract. - This was-agreefi to by the teacher, who however failed td appear agzin for several weeks. A few weeks ago trustee East emgaged a Warsaw man as coach of the Mentone high schoeol. ‘When this man arrived to sign his-contraect, the Rome City teacher also was Johnny-on-the-spot and demanded the contract. Now both teachers say they have been hired on East's “non-tobac-co’”” contract and both threaten to sue it not allowed to sign the contract.

Entrance ¥as gained by forcing a window open, Elkhart police believe all of the filling station robberies in Elkhart and Goshen recently have been “pulled” by the same gang of thie“ves{ “ ; Gioshen Bans Peddling. Anordinance “designed to curb theg activities -of itinerant and irresponsible peddlers was adopted on its third and final reading by the -Goshen city council. The ordinance fixes the li-. cense fee for peddlers at $2OO a year. and provides that no license for less tHan a year shall be issued. A slight change was made in the ordinance when reference to ‘“‘canvassing” was eliminated. The ordiance makes an exception of persons who sell in whole sale quantities to local retailers ang persons who sell produce or provisions raised by themseleves.

Short 1927 Corn Crop. The 1927 corn crop will be the shortest since 1903 according to the Juiy crop reporte issued yesterday by the department of agriculture. A total production of 2,274,000,000 bushels s expected leSs by 371,000,000 bushels than the 1926 crop. L Smaller acreage and poor growing conditions combined to lessen the total crop the report stated. The falling off in the number of acres is estimated "at 2,000,000. Most of the decrease was in the central west, the south planting more corn than 'in previous years.

Smaller plates but more distinct numerals will. feature indiana’s 1928 automobile license plates according to Mark W. Rhoads m.anager of the state automobile license department, who spoke ‘at the annual meeting of -the Hoosier ‘State Automebile Association at Terre Haute. The new piates wil} be a half inch wider and four inches shorter than the present plate and will bear white numerals on 2a maroon background. ‘lndiana, 1928" will be spelled in full at the botton of the plate.
