Barron assistant State bank examiner had stated that the state banking laws had been violated in operation of the bank. Charles H. Ludwig realtor with an ffice in Elkhart for $lO,OOO damages n superior court as the result of a ‘beating”, administered by the defendant. i ~ The complaint avers that on April 5 1927 the plaintiff ‘“was necessitated ¥y his business to call at the Chicago Victor Club’s office in Elkhart to secure certain cars.” : ‘While he was there it is averred, thie defendant struck him a number of “imes with his fists without cause, hitting him on the head, face and body, ‘knocking him “around and about”. ‘hreaking his nose, spraining his shouller tearing the ligaments injuring the lumbar of his back, tearing loose a rupture of long standing, which he now has to bandage and protect with 'a truss, shocking his nervous system ynd causing him to be sick so that he t ‘s unable to work as a collector. - It is averred the defendant has beern 'compelled to spend $5O for medical }services; that l}e is 56 years old and nat- he has been damaged in the Lan sit s g :
Coolidges Offered Home. Among the invitations sent to Pre'sident Coolidge to spend the summer n the middle west is one from Phil'ip A. Snyder of White Pigeon. Mr. Anyder is the best known dynamiter of St. Joseph county and in a letter to %W, A. Cavin prominent lumberman of Sturgis he stated that he already had sent the invitation to the President >nd that he wanted the co-operation »f influéntial citizens in procuring & suitable mansion at Klinger lake. Klinger lake lies six miles west of Sturgis and Mr. Snyder explains ‘hat he has carefully outlined to thg President the advantages offered in that locality. Mr. Snyder is awaiting the arrival of Mr. Coolidge’s investigators whom he expects any day now to inspect that community with a view toward accepting his invitation. : ‘Going Too Fast. Rupert Lyons who works at a cream station in LaGrange seems to have a Ford of unusual speed. Traveling on the highway west of LaGrange las week ;he happened to pass Sheriff Minich at the rate -of about fifty-fivc miles per hour. The sheriff was un lible to keep in close formation with the flying flivver with his make of « Lyons next passed State Highway Officer Donavan and after a several mile chase Officer Donavan headed him off.- Lyons was taken before Justice Burritt and was fined one doly lar and costs. ‘The highway officen advised Lyons to get a speedometex on his Ford touring car or it would run away with him some time. |
Pioneer Resident Dies. Andrew Rowe 84 pioneer resident of Elkhart county died at his home in Elkhart Friday after an illness of four days due to infirmities. He had planned a dinner for yesterday in celebration of his 85th birthday anniversary He was a members of the 84th Reg., Indiana Volunteer Infantry in the Civi} war. Surviving are his secon three grandchildren, one great grandchild. two step-sons and one step-dau: ghter. i -—-4—-—...‘__-‘ Five Are Paroled. Five inmates of the state reformatory at Pendelton were under parole today by action of Governor Jackson on the recommendations oft the board of trustees of the institution. Among those paroled were: Charles Adams, sentenced from Lake county for manslaughter; Peter Bendick sentenced: from : Lake county for robbery and Pete Brock sentenced from Putnan county for escaping from the state penal farm. : - Farm Residence Is Destroyed. A large two story frame house owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Eby three miles south of Osceola was burned to the ground Thursday afternoon. The contents of ‘the first floor were saved. It is believed that defective wiring caused the blaze. Mr. Elby carried some insurance. | Freak Fire. , A friction spark caused by rapid rubbing of a piece of silk set off a pan of gasoline and seriously burned Miss Ora Rauner 35 of Fort Wawne. She was cleaning some silk garments in gasoline at the time. The flames burst into her face. Fire wihch followed the explosion caused $3OO damage to the home. ~ INSTRUCTORS TO LOSE JOBS Bftween, Twenty-five and Thirty-five Will Not Be Re-Employed By - Kosciusko Trustees Twenty-five to thirry-five teachers in (Kosciusko county will not be re-. employed by their township trustees because of the passage of the teacher’s tenure law by the last legislature. -~ A number of township trustees were in Warsaw last week and one of them told a Times reporter that four of the seventeen trustees have decided this year to make a clean sweep of teachers now employed who will come. under the provisions of the tenure law. ' The tenure law is not only going to work a hardship upon the trustees but also upon many good and worthy 'teachers. The trustees will be censure if he.employes some one who is not popular in the community, and few teachers have the endorsement of every patron. On the- other hand miany competent teachers will be shifted in order to prevent them becoming life instructors in a certain district or city. Some teachers will feel bad over their dismissal, but it 18 the opinion that it wouid be a very foolish move for a trustee to bind a community to any one teacher.
L Found Dead. _ - Mrs. Mary Horton 70 of Milford wag found dead at noon last Tuesday by Fugene Felkner who had called at her Lome on business and receiving nq reply to his knock he entered. He found Mrs. Horton lying on the floor, Neighbors of Mrs. Horton had not seen her since Friday and in all probability had been dead for several days Coroner Landis was called to conduct the inquest. : : People Make 11l by Drinking Milk Fifty-four residents of Argos made ill by drinking milk have fully recovered. The cause of the illness has not yet been determined although it is believed that it was some poison in the milk. Slayew of Elkhart Co. Man to Hang. John Walton Will, 48 salyer of Albert Nusbaum, South Chicago contractor and former resident of Elkhart county, was called before Chief Justice William J. Lindsay in Chicago and informer that all legal resources have been eéxhansted By his attorney to savy him from the hangman’s noose. Eliza Nusbaum, 60 years old, wife of the ;murdered man, is now serving a life sentence for her part in the murder; which took place in December, 1925. Attorney Rocca D.
