Earl Whittaker, 37, an employe of the Big Four roundhouse at Elkhart committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid some time Sunday in a house near Five Points four miles west of Union. The body clad in underwear and socks 'was round across a bed in an upstairs room.. The man’s wife, Minnie Pearl Whittaker, who had filed suit‘for divorce some time ago, had rented the house for a storage building and was living with her brother Orrie Williams, near there. A note was left by Whittaker but it was taken by the coroner of Cass county, who could not be reached. Family troubles were thought to be the cause for the act. : : Wabash Youth Hurt. Dwight Wallace 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wallace living at Wabash is in the county hospital with about four inches of the ulna bone in ‘his right forearm blown away and the arm and hand badly lacerated from the discharge of a shot gun. : . The young man and his brother Dan 16 had the shotgun in a boat with them. In attempting to take the gun from the boat the trigger caught exploding the shell the chidrge of which passed through Dwight's arm. Doctors said it was not likely that amputation would be necessarv:

Four Fail in Jail Delivery. For the third time since he was arrested nearly a year ago Tommy O’Brien alias Thomas Young charged with the murder of L. C. Kreidler South Bend druggist has been an inmate of a jail in which prisoners either escaped or attempted to escape. Four prisoners in the jail at South Bend where O’Brien is held made a bid for freedom by atacking two>trusties and two deputy sheriffs with pepper and clubs, but were finally subdued. \ The Blackaller Players in “The Man From Colorado’”, a story of an Americanized Englishman, a splendid play—‘a.lso regular picture program at Crylstal Friday pight .. . ; Wawasee Musican Dies. ‘ A chemical analysis of the contents of the stomach of Robert Grau 27 who died at the Lincoln dance hall where he was a musician, early Monday morning revealed the presence of a quantity of wood alcohol. This was given as the cause of his death by Dr. Edgar N. Mendenhall county coroner of Fort Wayne. Grau played in the orchestra for dance until after 10 o’clock Sunday night and then became ill.- He was taken to a rest room in thedancehall and placed in bed. He died about 1:30 o’clock Monday morning. Grau was known to many Ligonier persons having been a member of the Ross Franklin orchestra at Wawasee last summer.” He continued playing with the Franklin orchestra at Wabash until after the the holidays, but had not been connected with that organization for several months. Grau played a trumpet and cornet. e Dead Man Found. The body of a b5O- year old man identified as W. J. Hart was found Monday evening in an alley in South Bend by John Lochmondi and Frank L. Major carpenters working on a store building. L » Fully clothed but devoid of valuables the body bore no marks of violence. The body was still warm when ith’e men came upon it. { ' Coroner Carl C. Reifeis arter a preliminary examination stated that death might have happened from natural causes as the aged man walked through the alley. - i Neighbors in the vincinity stated that shortly before the body was found an automoble drove into the alley stopped and then puiled away.

Must Give Bondor Go to Jail. Shirely Kline 35 years old pleaded pleaded guilty to a charge of tfailing ta support his four children when arraigned in the circutt court before Judge James S. Drake at Goshen and was sentenced to the state prison at Michigan City for one to seven years. The court then gave Kline until Saturday to provide bond insuring payment of $l2 a week for the support of the children for a period of two years. If the bond is provided within that time Kline’s sentence will be suspend ed. Kline was arrested at South Bend Sunday and taken back to . Vernon of Goshen announced Tuesday morning that he had tendered his resignation Monday afternoon to Prosecutor Glen Sawyer of Elkhart effective April 20th. On recommendation of Aldo J. Simpson chatrman of ‘the Elkhart county republican committee Mr. Sawyer appointed Att’y George R. Harper of Goshen as Mr. Vernon’s successor. . : : Mr. Vernon has been deputy prosecutor in Elkhart county for five and a half years and has discharged his duties satisfactory in every way. :

L Mrs. Van Dusen, who returned to the home of her parents Tuesday, said she had been working' ow a farm near South Bend and that she had returned to complete divorce preceedings started shortly before she vanished. : , i Because of measurements of the headless body tallied with those of Mrs. Van Dusen, police had held ‘tho theory that he body was that of the missing woman. : ' This belief was strengthened when Mrs. Van Dusen failed to reappear after weeks of publicity regarding the case, : j ; Bowling Notes. Senior Class Play. “The Whole Town’s Talking” is the name of the play which the senior ciass has chosen for this year's production. It is a well known dnd popular comedy, containing not only clever lines but also comic situations. April 21 and 22, at the Hign sSchool auditorium. } ; ' - Fire Damages Farniture, : Damage estimated at close to $lOO was done to furpiture on a truuk driven by a Goshen man, while enroute to Kendallville Tuesday. The fire was noticed by Benton residents as the truck passed through that town and the driver was stopped after traveling a short distance. It is believed a-stranger, who was “given a lift” set the furniture on fire.
