Man Has Large Hogs. Elmer Rummell of five miles southeast of Wakarusa in Union township, has a drove of hogs that are said to be by far the largest of any in northern Indiana. - Mr. Rummell has 35 hegs that average about 700 pounds each, 40 that average 400 pounds or nmore, and 45 other large shoats. Mr. Rummell is feeding the hogs for market. Many persons visit the farm to see the huge animals. - Freak Clricken Hatched. The first freak of the 1927 hatching season was reported at Burnettsville, by Mrs. Walter Whitman. A four legged chicken was found among those taken from a nest at the Whiteman farm. O’Brien Trial Set For Today. . A clipipng taken from a Definance 0., paper announces the latest inquiry ‘was receivd at Hicksville by Manager Karl Shruder of the Postal Telegraph company from a young man in Texas asking if the Dowell school was still in existence as he was desious of learning the trade. . Sent to Farm. , Ira Alwine, 50, of Benton township, Eikhart coynty, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of: intoxicating liguor inthe Goshen city court before the city judge and was sentenced to the penal farm for 35 days and fined $l3O. _ T Alwine was arrested with Joe Buttner of South Bend by Sheriff Long and deputies a week ago in a raid on the Abwine farm in Benton township The charge against Buttner was dismissed when Alwine pleaded - guilty and told the court that he owned the liguor and that Buttner his son-in-law had no interest in it. Alwine’s fine | was paid. ; .
Drive On Corn Borer Starts. The drive, to eliminate the corn borer in the vicinity of Auburn has been started in charge of Leroy Hoffman, assistant director of the educational and extension forces in the corn borer cleanup work in the six counties now under gquarantine. The mission of the government men is to assist the farmers to rig up equipment they already have in an effort to combat the corn borer. A series of county wide demonstrations will be held- soon. Release Man 150 Miles From Home A laundry truck and its driver were kidnaped from South Bend last Thursday evening and the driver George Moyer of Mishawaka was forced to take the men to within nine miles of St. Mary's Ohio. The bandits took between $6O and $75 in money. The truck was recovered later near St. Mary’s. : e Aged Farmer Killed. Michael Zerbe 80 year old farmer was brutally slain with an axe and his wife beaten unconscious in their bome near Buchanan, Mich., April 3. The killer in an effort to hide the crime set fire to the Zerbe home and escaped. : Neighbors discovered the house on fire broke down the door and carried the bodies out. Authorities are unable to find any motive.
Draws Term at Penal Farm. August Klein operaor of a soft drink parlor at Fort Wayne pleaded guilty to a charge of maintaining a nusisance and was fined $4OO and sentenced to serve six months at the lpenal farm. Klein was heavily fined about a month ago when he appealed ‘the case and succeeded in reducing the fine to $lOO. ‘ Cancer ¢al .33 Death : N. 8. DePoy 76 died ar his home near Collins in Whitlev county from cancer of the rtomaeh. He bad bheen very feeble siree last Decewber. Injuries sustained when he fell twenty feet from the hay mow in his barn alighting on a wagon caused the death of W. P. Merriman 51 prominent farmeriof Adams county. - A fractured skull caused his death. He never regained consciousness after the fall. . Nab Jail Breaker. Pan Dewey Gooch 25 with a number of aliases was apprehended at Fort Wayne Friday and is held in jail as a fugitive from justice. Ralph S, Todd 46, well known throughout Indiana as a banker and“ member of the republican party, ended his life Friday afternoon by shooting himself in the head at a farm, one and a half miles northwest of Blufl!—l ton. ‘ | Business worries brought on by thei unexpected closing of the Studebaker bank of Bluffton, of which he was president, are attributed as the cause of his suicide. ; In the note found beside the body brief instructions were given for notifying his family and distribution of several letters, which are expected to give additional information.causing his suicide. : ; Quarrel Ends in Tragedy.. A quarrel over a horse trade at Danville Ind., broke up a -30-year friendship and ended in tragedy. . Charles Sheets 45 shot his old ‘boyhood chum Clay Wilson 40 in the face with a shot gun and then he killed himself. ; i Wilson was rushed to the Indiana Christian hospital in ° Indianapolis. ’Physicians said his condition was grave but that he had a chance for recovery. : .
