Pardon Plea Is in State Status Quo. Attorney General Sargent sald the parole case of former Governor Warren T. McCray of Indiana now in Atlanta penitentiary for using the mails to defraud is in status quo. He explained McCray’s ill health plea for parole had been investigated and physicians indicated the forier governor’s condition was not very serious. ; .

Civil War Veteran Dies.
Michael Bowman 81 of Topeko civi} was veteran died last week at the home of his son George Bowman of Middles bury. Death was caused by apoplexy with which he was stricken soon after he reached the home of his son wherd he went to visit. He had lived alond at Topeka since the death of his wifé ten years ago. He was a retired far, mer. Two sons and three daughtersg survive also 41 grandchildren and 64 great grandchildren. The decedent was an elder in the Dunkard church t‘here} They funeral was held vesterday af, ternoon. - ’
Warsaw Police Recall Peddler
Authorities at Warsaw Tecalled Kinge William Jewish peddler of Lapaz Ind., for further questioning following the finding of his automobile partly burned in a woods north of Warsaw. William who alleged that he was held up and robbed of money checks goods and his automobile early last Wednesday by five bandits near the Berkey school house was in War, saw and repeated his original story to the officérs. That was before thg automobile was found. :J

Garwood Lanzeman a farmer living near Brown City. Mich saw a horseshoe with protruding nails lying in ¢he middle of the road. Thinking that he would save a moterist the misfortune of a puncture Lanzeman got out of his car and waded through the mud of the road to salvage the shoz, As he was about to climb back into his car with the lucky emblem he saw a pocketbook half buried in the mud. The purge contained $5O in bills.

Confesing participation in the couns terfeit ticket scandal at the regional basket ball tournament at Anderson a week ago two Indianapolis youths started serving sentences of ten days in jail. Herman McAfee 24 and Kenneth Rinker 14 both of Poe were wounded when au automatic revolver in the hands of the former was accidentally dgcharged as the two were examining it in a garage. The bullet passed through McAfee’s left thigh' and through' Rinker’s hand and finally lodged in Rinker’s left thigh. Rinker was taken to Fort Wayne for an operation. ¥ g

Fire of undetermined origin Monday night was discovered between rolls of paper in the pressroom of the Journal Gazette, Heat from the flames set off part of the automatic sprinkler system and two large presses and several rolls of paper were drenched. The greatest damage was done by water and there. was no delay in publication of the paper. R
Injury Is Fatal to Boy.
. J. D. Carothers 17 son of Mr. and’ Mrs. James Carothers, of Cassopolis, Mich., died last week from the effects of an infection resulting from a bas) ketball injury. He was president ol the junior class of Cassopolis high school and suffered an injury to the leg in a tournament at Niles thred weeks ago. 4 .
Farm Home Destroyed by Fire
Fire of unknown origin discovered ik the early morning hours destroyed the farm home of Neal Hoffman to~ gether with part of its contents one and one-half miles sotithwest of Brimfield. The fire was discovered by the voung daughter of Mr.-and Mrs. Hoff‘man who aroused her parents. :

The construetion of 26,841 miles o road including 416 in Indians and th maintenance of 239,847 miles are included in the 1927 state highway programs of 47 states according to reports received by the bureau of public, roads, United States department
agriculture. The programs also include the comstruction of a number. of large bridges and the reconstruction of roads previously improved. O; account of uncertainty of supporting legislation no estimate of the season’s work is possible as yet in Connecticut, . :
In carrying out the above program it is expected there will be expended under the supervision of the state highway departments in the 47 states a total of $638,483,000 ;
In addition to the state expenditures approximate estimates indicate thag counties and other lesser sub-divis-ions of government will expend during the year $475,000,000. . Of the expenditures by the state highway departments of the 47 states approxibately $421,000,000 is the estimated amount for road construction and according, to present plans more than $56,000,000 additional will be spent for new bridges. For reconstruction of existing roads it is estimated that the expenditure will be nearly $27,000,600 and for maintenance approximately $126,000,000. ;‘
Cattle, Horses Barn.
The barn on the farm of D. H. ’-Boyer southwest of Sturgis was burned to the ground. Two horses, three cows, a large quantity of hay and grain and other property was destroyed. The loss is estimated at about $3, 500. Mr. Boyer states tiat he haq only $l,OOO insurance. Mr. Boyer discovered the blaze late at night and is not able to explain its cause. -
