BRIDGE ;TRIBUTE | TO - SKILL OF ENGINEER

Structure, Cr : Firth of : Forth a Marvel. The huge bridge which spans the firth of Forth in Scotland, apd known as the Forth bridge -is a marvel of engineering skill. . This wonderful bridge was started in 1882 but was not completed until 1889. Erected to obviate the detour around the head of the firth, its total length is over 8,000 feet. It crosses the firth at Queensferry, where the channel is comparatively narrow, and where stands in mid-channel the Isle of Inchgarvie. : .The amount of steel used In its structure is somewhat amazing—sl,ooo tons—woven into this giant bridge, which is capable of holding aloft two railway tracks so firmly that express trains are able to pass over at a speed of 60 to 70 miles an hour. The manner in which the workmen dug out the bed of the estuary until they reached the solid rock on which they built the masonry, working all the time under compressed air conditions, is amazing and great credit is due to the engineers who had the work in hand, Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker. This bridge is one of the most famous of the “Cantilever” type, sometimes known as a bracket bridge, so called because each end of a span Is built out like a bracket, braced on a firm foundation, and 4 center portion is then riveted to the ends, similar to a shelf supported on wall brackets.

As with suspension bridges, cantilever bridges can be built in long spans, so these types are chosen where many supports. would be a hindrance to navigation. Each year there is 145 acres of surface to be painted, so one can readily conceive the extent of this bridge. ; The two main spans are 1,710 feet long and tormefl of two. cantilevers, each 650 feet lofg, united by a girder 850 feet in span. Supporting the cantilevers are steel towers 361 feet high. It will not be surprising that the cost of erecting this bridge amounted to nearly $10,000,000, for from 4,000 to 5000 men were employed for seven years before the Forth jpridge was opened for traffic. ¥

Praises Chinese Music

Music at the Confucian birthday anniversary fete is a real masterpiece despite the fact that to xigst@ foreigners Chinese music is ear torturing. This is the opinion of an American mausician in Peking,. who, although having not had the opportunity to attend the fete itself, to which no. foreigner is admitted, was privileged to witness the rehearsal. “Here was real music,” he relates in the New York Evening Post, “music of symphonic or operatic quality. Composers are searching the world over, from the Kongo jungles to Iceland, for themes from folk songs, and here is a magnificent thing almost ready made for western ears.”

Russia Needs Many Horses

Thirty-five million horses are not enough for the Russians and they are making commercial arrangements with neighboring steies for the import of more animals. In Russia are already one-third the horses in the world. Lithuania and East Prussia are two horse breeding centers from which delegations recently have gone to Moscow to work out plans for sending horses into the Soviet state, to meet the great demand of the agricultural sections. Tractors are w’ib'eing' introduced as rapidly us possible. Mostly they come from the United States, but Russla is, building some.

Salem Can Boast Three - . Centuries of History ‘Few . towns in America-are: blessed with.a. more richly colored. historical background: tharw Salem, Mass., whieh last sunimer celebrated the:tercentenary of its founding. The old Puritan rule, ‘with all its stern virtues and faults, the days of the mighty. merchant fleet that carried: the sails of the .¢ity’s ships to the far seas, and that gloomy chapter known the world over-as.the “witchcraft delusion,” are sufficient to endow the ‘Salem celebration with more than ordinary vividness. It was in 1628 that Robert Conant and his band of English planters and fishermen started the settlement ef Naumkeag. Two years later Capt. John Endicott and his colonists arrivéed from England. They possessed a charter from the English company that gave them the rights to the land, and with their coming the name of the settlement was changed to Salem, a contraction of Jerusalem. From the first Salem was of a religious character. The rules of Puritanism were rigidly enforced under the ‘ron rule of Endicott, the first governor, who suppregsed tha :uerriment of the young as s misde meanor, and even went so far as to cut the red cross from the flag ot England, the mother country. Not until 1692 did the wave of witcheraft hysteria that sent 20 e tims to ignominious death strike the town, but as early as 1652 crses 62 witcheraft had been reported in tie colonies. TFor six months In tuat eventfiy year Selem brought the fear of witchcraft to heights theretofove unknown in the new land. Mea and women were persecuted, tried on tlLe most flimsy evidence and condemacd to die without a chance to cefesd themselves, :

The Revolution found the Puriian zeal busy in new channels. Salem claimed the honor of making the fisst ‘armed resistance to the British i America. A Salem clipper -ohip brought the first cargo ever curtied in an American bottom direct from Canton to New England. and from this port sailed the- first American pleasure’ yacht to visit Burop:. —Now York Times.

Well, thrze fish ticket travelers were held up rna Saturday afternoon by an inspector ‘“‘Here,’ he said. “This won't -da Three fish tickets, and only one red among the lot of you! ; ““Ssh!
