Fifth Wife Jails Husband 75

A 76-year old man led away tq jail Monday to await trial on charges of non-support preferred by his fifth wife. ' 1 _The defendant—Albert Shepard R. F. D. No. 5 South Bend—pleaded not guilty when arraigned in city court at South Bend. “We were married about a year ago,” Mrs. Shepard told City Judge Chester L. DuComb, “and Albert has been dependent on me all that time. My son by a former marriage lives with us and he and Albert haven’t ‘been able to get along so I've filed suit for divorce.” Her husband was not represented by counsel at the city court arraignment Monday and being unable to obtain bond he was ordered confined to the count jail pending trial.

Committee Selects Club Leader.

Arthur Morris, who jdentified him self as a member of the champion livestock demonstration ‘team in Noble county last year, has been selected by the executive committee of the farm bureau to act as county leadel) for livestock, corn and potato clubs during the coming year. The selection was made with the view of more frequent club visitations and development of leadership among club members. Arthur is 18 years of age and has had considerable club and farni experience: ¢

Six Men to Hang.

Six men stolid and showing the dull pallor of prison confinement arg waiting in the county jail for Friday and death. They have been convicted of leading the break from the state prison at Joliet, 111., last summer in which Deputy Warden Peter Klein was clubbed and hacked to death. All six were caught with in a few days after they had gained ‘their freedom.

“Speed” Bradford and His Star “4” “Speed” Bradford and his Star “4” arrived here Tuesday at 1:27 P. M, on the first lap of the 3,000 mile “race of a century’ sponsored by Fred Kiester local star dealer. Bradford’s stop in Ligonier was a little less than five minutes and this time was consumed by giving away candy kisses and pennies to the children. About -100 people gathered in front of the Crystal on Cavin street to see “Specd” and his famous smile.

Nappanee Man Arrested.

Otis L. Smith of Nappanee ownher of a second hand furniture store Nappanee was arrested by ‘Deputy Sheriff Frank Knisley and Officer ‘Harold Waterman of the Goshen police force charged with assault and battery on his wife. Smith pleaded not guilty in the Goshen city couri and his trial was set for mext Tuesday. . : A

Negro is Held for Shooting.

Norris Wallace, 21, colored, of Elkhart, who has been a fugitive since December 5, was arrested at Elkhart Friday night and is held on a charge of assault with intent to kill. Wallace is said to have confessed that he shot three times at Mrs. Cherrie Allen, dnd also at Tommy Clark, both colored. :

Managers Meet.

~ Managers of the L. R. Lepird & Co., ‘stores in Indiana and Michigan were here Wednesday attending a convention of the store managers. The ‘business sessions were held at Hotel Ligonier where luncheon was served to the ‘delegation at noon.” :

To Rebuild Stores.

Work has ‘been ‘started clearing away the debris of the $75,000 fire which destroyed the Mawids - clothing store and J. A. Moore furniture stor at Garrett a week ago. Plans are being - made to rebuild both buildings. ‘ L

Prison Guard Killed.

P: J. McDonald a guard at the Indiana state penitentiary at Michigan City, was instantly killed and Harry ‘Westfall 34 also a prison guard was seriously injured when the automobile Westfall was driving left a road in Hammond Tuesday morning and overturned in a ditch. Witnesses said the automobile was traveling at a ‘high rate of speed. .

Dies of Pneumonia.

John Kirkpatrick, of Auburn died near Albion Monday within five weeks following the death of his wife who was buried January 2. Double pneumonia caused his death.
