To Aid Orphans Home. The Legionnaires of Indiana have been called upon to suppont a program for appropriation of funds by the state legislature for improvements at the Knightstown Soldiers and Sailof’s Orphans home,in an appeal by J. H. Klinger State Adjutant of the American legion.
' A report miade by the legion’s wvisiting committee indicated the need for improvements and stressed the importance of equipping the home with a modern sanitary system with mnew sewers and inside toilets. The report made by C. F. Payne of Newcastle, chairman met with full concurrence of the other members John Lowry, Cambridge City and Ewing Shields of Greenfield and the hearty approval of the management of the institution through Superintendent L. A.. Cortner.
11,500 Animals On Display.
Visitors to ‘the International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago Novem-: ber 27th December 4th will find many. events of interest occurring continuously from early merning until late at night every day of the exhibition. There will be on display 11,500 cattle, horses, sheep and swine .and 5,000 samiples of grains, small seeds ‘and hay. In the various buildings will be found Federal and State edueational exhibits, A Meat Shoppe and demeongtrations and champion products of junior club work adctivities. Each night a brilliant entertainment will be staged in the Amphitheatre and in the surrounding buildings agriculturlal organizations will hold numerous meetings.
Man Drowns at South Bend.
One man was drowned -and two others narrowly escaped a similar fate when the automobile in which: they were riding plunged into the St. Joseph river at the foot of LaFayette boulvard. The three men enroute ito their homes in Benton Harbeor, Mich, had been drinking police said. ' "Ollie Alden, 52, brether wof Fred Alden, chief of police at St. Joseph, Mich., was the man wheo was drowned. His two companions, who were rescued by police from their place ‘of refuge on top of their submerged sedan, were Edward Baushker and Fred Rowe. :

Helen Young, of BElkhart, who “vas held i nthe county juil at Goshen in default of $5,000 bond from June 3 to October 7, as a witness in the miur. der case of John Hall, who was seu~ tenced to be executed, has filed an action in the superior court at *Ei*-k-‘ hart seeking 'to recover $1.25 a day as witness fees, a total of $lB6, i’or‘ the time she was held in jail. 5
Match Head Causes Blaze.
When a taxi driver in the Interurban station at Goshen lighted a safety match on a mateh box the lighted head flew through a wire grating at the closed news stand and ignited the stock of periodicals. The grating prevented immediate access to ithe blaze and before the fire depgrtzmen.t arrived extensive damage resulted.

The . serious illness of Mrs. Chas. Shell, of White Pigeon, Mich., is reported. She was a former resident of Noble county and is a daughter of Joseph Caldwell and a sister of Mrs. Adrain and Mirs. Mark Kinnison.

Scarlet Fever Raging.
Thirteen homes in Elkhart are under quarantine for scarlet fever. Special precautions are being taken to halt the spread of the .disease. All of-the cases are said to be mild.

Farm Home Burns, Fire starting presumably from a defective flue destroyed the farm ‘home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cummins three miles east of Lisbon ghortly after 11 o’clock Friday. The loss is estimated at $1,500 with $BOO insurance. Praectically all of the household goods including 400 cans .of fruit potatoes and other vegetables in the cellar were consumed Only a few of the household articles were removed by neighbors. :

Frank Johnson, who was ' taken from Kendallville to South Bend for a hearing before United States Commissioner Fae W.. Paterick on a charge of transporting liquor, was bound over to the federal court at Fort Wayne and -his bond was fixed at 1,000. .
Hands Badly Burned.
When a celluloid cheese box in thz store of F. J. Keim at Sturgis was ignited by a burning match carelessly thrown upon it by a customer, Mr Kiem’s hands were badly burned while trying to extinguish the flames.
Faees Trial For Shooting.
The trial of the case of Miss Golden Francies of Roanoke charged with shooting Earl Williams last March 21 at his home near Zanesville with intent to kill was set for Jamuwary 3. The case previously had been sef for trial December 18.

| Dog Bite On Eye. ot Ray Glass of Kendallville is suffering with a badly infected right eye the result of a collision with his dog which was aiding him in rounding up a pig. The dog accidentally nipped Mr. Glass near the eye imbedding its teeth in his check. : Widow of Former Senator Dies ~Mrs. Benjamin F.
