" ‘Again the Jews the world over are observing the holy season which begins with Rosh Hashanah of New Year’s day on the evening of Septem~ ber 8 and ends with the Shemini Atzereth—the Feast of Conclusion—on the evening of September 30. ‘ In the Jewish tradition the Rosh Hashannah marks the anniversary of the creation of the world supposed to have taken place 5,687 years ago. The present Rosh Hashanah therefore will mark the beginning of the year 5,687. The Rosh Hashanah derives its significance from the fact that it is but the introduction to the day of. atonemen which follows 10 days later. . In the Reform synagogue, Rosh Hashanah is elebrated from sunset of atonement which follows 10 days later. ! In the Reform synagogue Rosh Hashanah is celebrated from sunset of September 8 to sunset of September 9 whereas among orthodox Jews the holiday does not end until sunset of September 10.
