A stranger driving at the rate of 60 miles an hour coming from thq south, drove on the new _pavement made in western Kimmell last year, but not completed, on account of thdg refusal of the B. &O. to erect an overhead bridge. ‘A tressel had been placed across the new road near thg ‘Sparta church, but was not seen by, the driver. His machine turned turs tle in Mrs.Bartley’s field near Kimmell and the man was pinned beneath the car for an hour, before a passing machine investigated and gave thg alarm. After the man was released he was taken to Ligonier and examin, ed by physicians. No bones wera broken. He showed a telegram he had received stating that his mothen was in a dying condition, and he boarded a train for Chicago at once. —Albion Democrat.
| New Hotel at Oakwood. Contract was let Tuesday to W, Nussbaum of Berne, for the construc, tion of a new hotel at Oakwood Parl for $37,870. _ The new structure will be erected on the site of the old hotel, which will be torn_down. Work to begin about September 7. It is expected that the new hotel will con#din 65 guest rooms and a large cafeteria, will be ready for occupancy May 1, 1927. »

: Death of Mrs. Long. . Mrs. Amanda J. Long, wite of George Long, passed away at the family home in this city Friday afternoon. She was nearly 66 years of age and had been ill several months.’ Mrs. Long was an old resident of this city and was highly respected. The Long family have had much grief.- It will be remembered that Mr. Long recently had a leg amputated and was laid up for quite a time during the illnes of his wife. ;
t Mrs. Long'was the mother of ning children, seven of whom, four daughters and ‘three sons along with thd husband survive. The daughters are Mrs. Jacob Pollok, Mrs. David Price, Mrs. Walter Gard and Mary Long at home. The sons are Edward, Ligonier, Logan, of Michigan, and Chestey at Elkhart.
The funeral was held from the latd home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with burial in Oak Park. ¢ :
Two Roads Sold.
Contracts were awarded by the county commissioners Friday for the Hawes concrete road in Sparta township to cost $26,000 and to be done October 15, g.nd Barker road in Wayne township, concrete, is to cost $70,000. The P. Beard company, of Indianapolis secured both jobs. This improvement is to be completed by. Decembeyp first.
Big Wheat Yield.
- Wheat on the Sparta township: farm of Perry Kiser last week threshed out, 52 bushels to the acre machine measure. Other grain growers in the same township enjoyed big yields.

Clever Forgeries.
Frederick Herman Worm was arrested at Mishawaka and charged with having forged s marriage license which he used to illegally wed Misd Eva Wirick of Mishawaka. Worm’s lawful wife lives in South Bend less ’than four miles from the love nest ‘which he set up for the Mishawaka girl. The illegal marriage is said to have taken place June 28, 1926. When the Mishawaka bride suspecteqd something was wrong, she states, Worm “confessed” he had been pre, viously married and exhibited a fake decree of divorce, supposed to have been issued from the St. Joseph circuit court. -
Valuables Missing.
A thorough investigation into the death of Vernon “Tommy” Smith, 34, ‘well-known jockey of Fort Wayne, ‘who was fatally injured according tq reports, when he was run over by an automobile August 16., at the fair grounds at Celina, Ohio, will be asked by his father, W. O. Snfith. Fear has been expressed that Smith met with foul play before being run over by the automobile, which was driven by Fred Smith,.a Celina dry goods merchant. The belief is supported by the allegation that a considerable sum of money he carried {s missing in addition tg a diamond stick pin, a ring and a gold watch.
Fire at Berne.
’ Fire was discovered in the buildidgg of the Adams County Lumber comIpany,‘ at- Berne, Thursday night and gained such headway before help could be called that everything with the exception of a few small piles of lumber was destroyed. . The Berne volunteer fire department answered the alarm but wag unable to check the flames. All the building sand maghnery were destroyed, the loss being estimated at between $5,000 and $6,000. . A small part of its is covered by insurance. |
Two Marion Women Kill#d In Crash ‘Two Marion women are dead and ‘another was suffering with serious inyjuries ‘as a result of an auto being struck and demolished by a Pennsylvania passenger train at a crossing in that city. s : Mrs. Bertha Berry and Mrs. Gaynet Rominger, died from their injuries after being removed to a hospital. - Sentenced to Farm. Roy Cripe, who was arrested at Goshen on a charge of havihg stolen chickens from the farm of Melvin Miller, pleaded guilty to a charge of petit larceny in the ecity court and Judge Clell Firestone sentenced him to ninety days at the penal farm, and fined him $lO and costs. The fing was suspended. - Holdup Gets $BO. ~ Two heavily armed bandits held up the Enfnam Public Natatorium at South Bend Wednesday evening and escaped with approximately $BO.
