[_‘ City and Rural Trained Children City school children do better high ‘school work than rural children trained in one teacher schools according to a number of studies recently reported. According to one such study just completed by the research divi'sion of the Illinois State Teachers’ Association it was found that rural trained pupils in high schools of that ‘State averaged one-fifth of a year older per grade made lower school marks and failed in greater proportion than high school pupils whose elementary school training had been largely or wholly in village or city schools. : ;

{ In one group of high schools studies more than half of the pupils came from rural schools but these rural trained pupils received fewer than half of the total number of grades made in high school courses. In another group of high schools included in the study children from rural .schools made lower average grades than children from city ®nd village schools. - The former averaged 82.5 per cent, the latter 83.8 per cent. The greatest difference in grades appedred in history in which city trained pupils averaged 2 per cent high than rural trained pupils. In English the difference was 1.7 per cent in favor of city trained pupils while in mathematics the average was only .4 per cent less for rural trained children than for children whose elementary training had been in village and city schools. g .

Angjther Memorial.

Plans are -being laid for another memorial to Gene Stratton Porter, famous Indiana novelist who was a resident of Wabash county. The Geneva Ind., Chamber of Commerce has taken steps toward the raisof a-fund g} $l,OOO with which to erect a suitable memorial to the naturalis and writer who made her home in that city for several years. . Definite plans for the memorial to be erected have not yet taken form but several ideas have been advanced by those interested in the work. Many believe the erection of an arch over State road 21 at the beginning of; of the Limberlost trail which she made famous in her writings would be appropriate. Others favor the erection of a manument at the site of her home in Geneva while a third suggestion being considered is for the erection of a manument at the Limberlost cabin at Rome City.

Organized Farmers to Meet.

Organized farmers in the Tlndiana second agricultural district comprising eight counties in this section have accepted an invitation to hold a general get-together Fourth of July meeting at Cedar Lake LaGrange county two miles east and two miles north of Howe, on Monday July 5. The invitation was extended by the LaGrange Chamber of Commerce. Plans for the meeting which will be the first of the kind ever held in the state were recently completed. o

The getdtogether meeting will be a community effort and one of the features will be a special number to.be furnished by each of the counties. The Noble county organization has already prepared its number. . Prominent speakers will attend the meeting including congressman Diekinson of Towa and Congressman Hogg of the twelfth district. Efforts'are being made to have Senators Watson and Robinson atend. Albert Stump democratic candidate for the U. S.-sen-ate also plans to attend the meeting,

& To Raise $lOO,OOO - The city of Garrett named for John W. Garrett president of the Balti~ more & Ohio railroad when that line! was extended across nothern Indiana into Chicago in 1874 is raising $lOO,000 in an effort to induce an industry to locate there and occupy the Baltimore & Ohio shops equipment .of which-will be moved to Willard, Ohio, The rémoval is a hard blow for the town, as .it. is. without any other industry. Prospeets For Good Wheat Crop. Prospects of a good wheat crop in Noble county are very encouraging this year taken as a whole. The recent rains have hbrought the wheat along splendidly so that many fields are evenly covered with grain. The oats is a little late but indications are” it will come out alright. Hay will be much better than at first anticipated. The cool weather has not been benefical to corn and although the stands in the field sare good the }growth is unusuvally slow. e ot :

. Girl Attémpts Suicide. 4 Disappointed in various personal affairs is believed to be responsible for the attempted suicide of Ruby Smith 19 of South Bend at abeut 10 o’clock Tuesday night. Thief Steals Firearms. A well-equipped bandit was at large Friday with several rifles and a large store of amunition. - F. W.
