For this reason the clinic was called. At the clinic the guestion of attempt ing a delicate severing operation was gtaken up. Attendant physicians originally opposed the operation on the ground that the babies would have a very small chance of living but call‘ed in doctors from neighboring cities to aid in the decision. e
1,000 Miles Without Fooed.
George Hasler Johnston athlete and Marathon runner who has startied physicians by his feats of endurance while fasting is preparing to embark on the most spectacular advenure of his career. On June 1 he will leave Chicago on foot and walk to New York in thirty days without food, living on nothing but water during the entire trip. The actual distance of the hike is 1,000 miles. Experts agred that this will be one of the most dify ficult endurance tests ever attempted and unusual interest will be manifested in the progress and daily con-» dition of the athlete. -

Will Shoot oil Well at Howe.
Great interest is being manifested in the announcement that the oil well west of Howe will be shot Thursday between 11 a .m. and 2 p. m. Plang to shoot the well were made by J. W. Hunt of LaGrange manager in charggq of the work. For some years efforts have been made to locate oil in this section vszth little success to date, ‘Those who are interested in the projeet anxiously await results. If the well produces a flow of oil other wells will be driven and a real boom is expected. If the well is ‘dr'y” further efforts to locate oil in this section will likely be dropped.
Sued For Injury to Pupil
Jacob Halperin of South Bend the principal of a private sechool was made defendant in two suits for a total of $20,000 filed Monday morning by BenJamin Stelorow and his son Samuel, charging him with causing permanent injury to the left eye -of Samuel while the latter was a pupil in the school. $ a : The boys suit asks for $15,000 for the alleged loss of the sight of the eye, which he claims was impaired when the defendant struck him. ' Uncovers Buzzard’s Nest. ~ Albert and Walter Van Voorst re= port that they uncovered a buzzard's nest in a tree snag in the woods north iof Columbia; City while they were hunting mushrooms Monday. Albert was leaning against a snag when he heard a buzz. He jumped away as he at first thought it was a snake but the buzzard flew out of the stump, There were two eggs in the nest, It was the first buzzard’s nest that Mr. Van Voorst had ever found.
Held a% South Bend. Roy Rohrer 34 of Millersburg was arrested at South Bend Sunday on a charge of driving an antomobile while intoxicated. He pleaded not gullty in the city court and his hearing is set for May 27. MRohrer is said to have failed to make a turn at Chapin street and Washington Avenue and ran into, a house. e "

- Fine and Jall Term., - The superior court jury of Elkhart which heard the liquor charges against Leonard Frederickson and his wife of Elkhart returned a sealed verdict thig morning finding Mr. Fredrickson guilty of selling intoxicating liquor. He was fined $l3O and sentenced to serve 45°days in the county jail at Goshen. The charge against his wife was dismissed. ey Taken to Hospital. Dan Inks, son of Mr. and Mrs. W, B. Inks, who has been suffering from an infected ear, was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital Tuesday evening for treatment. The young man was a member of the high school graduating class. ‘

- Noble county lost one of maolggt and highly respected residents Tuesday May 26 in the death at his home near Cromwell of William S. Umben=: hower aged nearly 92 years. : Mr. Umbenhower was born July 2 1834 and came to Noble county when a youth. He retained his mental faculties. and was active up to his final ill+ ness. He loved farm life and was suecessful in agricultural pursuits. Mr. Umbenhower was a reader of the Banner from its first issue until ‘his death. : S L - Surviving are three sons and two daughters. The sons are John, Louig land Andrew Umbenhower and the
daughters Mrs. Werten Engle and Mrs. ‘Kate Woods. There are also.many other relatives and old friends left to ‘mourn the passing of a good man. The funeral will be held from the late home Friday morning at 10 o’tlaock with burial in Oak Park cemetery lLigonier. ' .
