Precedent may be upset in one .ortwo instances when Indiana republicans meet in state convention in Indianapolis May 26 and 27 to nominate candiates for several state offices. , The custom of renominating twoyear term officers must stand the test of severe competition this month end for the field is filled with strong runners for several places on the ticket. ‘The convention will nominate candidates for secretary of state audi, tor treasurer superintendent of public instruction, clerk of the supreme and appellate courts and the judges of the supreme and appellate courts from twq districts. :

Contest to date have developed for the nomination for secretary of state superintendent of public instruction, supreme court-in the third district, clerk of the supreme and appellate courts and state auditor. Incumbents in the office of state treasurer for the supreme court in the fifth district and for four places in the appellate court bench are without opposition to date.

Banker-County Agent Meeting

A. O. Shearer and J. B. Cunningham represented this County at the North-Eastern Banker-County Agent Conference called by ‘Wolfred Lindstrom, President of the Agricultural Committee of the Indiana Bankers Association at Fort Wayne Thursday. B. V. Widney former Agent presided, Everybody present spoke freely about the Aricugltural situation in their counties, and all were:in accord that the greatest improvement could be brought to this district if all forces would work on a five fold program consisting of the following projects, Legumes, Dairy, Women’s work, club work and business Management The matter project was meant to cover the productio nand marketing of all farm crops and livestock. :

Aged Farmer Ends Life.

With methodical precision William H. Bennett 80 farmer of east of Brgnson Michigan made complete arrangeuents for his death from chloroform, ing his faithfwl old horse to laying out the clothes to be used as his shroud, and then went to his barn and hanged himself. 3

Bennett’s wife whom he married in 1886 died on April 25 and his rela, tives assigned his desire to die from grief over the loss ‘although: he had evidenced no unusual sorrow since her death. Friends believe that he was concealing his true feelings.

Big Riley Hospital Fund.

‘The challenge gift of $500,000. made several weeks ago by the Ball brothers of Muncie to the James Whitcomb. Riley hospital for children has been oversubscribed in the state-wide campaign conducted by the Riley Memorial association it is reported.

It is understood that the total will reach approximately $1,300,000 : The Ball brothers’ gift was made on condition that the people of Indiana raise $1,000,000 to match their. $500,000 by June 1.

Ed Hawley attended a banquet at Ggs City Friday. Ed says lfe found out an after dinner speaker eats a lot of food he doesn’t want and then proceeds to talk about something he doesn’t understand to a crowd who don’t want to hear him. Ed made the trip on a motorcycle and says the roads near Silver Lake are wonderful His uncle is road supervisor there but ‘will resign this fall to take a job as violinist in an orchestra. ~ Miss Ruth Lung and Harvey Cole ‘were married May 8. They will reside in Ohio. ; . Bible school opened here Monday. ; Mrs. Sarah Mullin is home from a Goshen visit. : Albert Maggart has a neéw auto. Harry Robbins has an auto. Harry says it is a dustless roadster and will stand without being tied.

Robert Robbins now has charge of linotype machine in the Advance office. Robert says it was a very interesting job until his boss bought him a ball mitt, tennis racket and bicycle. Clark Myers was driving through his farm Friday with his horse and wagon looking after his fruit trees, ‘There were several cattle in one of ‘the fields he had to drive by. Last report was that Clark is busy with a doctor and his wagon is in a walnut tree. Mr. Myers said the trip would have been very enjoyable but the pardner on the drivers seat with him wore a red suit. : :

The annual alumni banquet and tdance wil lbe held at the school gymnasium at La Grange Friday even ing. May 28 The banquet will be held at 6:30 o’clock and the dance at 9 o’clock. Sentenced to Penal Farm.

Orie Miller who was recently arrested on a charge of stealing chiekens, had his hearing in. the circuit court Tuesday. He was given a sentence of 90 days in the penal farm. Sheriff Singleton took Miller and Wm. Kline to the Penal farm Wednesday and Arthur Swope to the reformatory at” Pendleton.

Dies at Kendallyille

Mrs. Carrie Strickland 48 wife of S. J. Strickland died at the family home early. Thursday morning after an illness of three months Born near Wolcottville the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, J. C. Gordon she grew to . womanhood there.and in 1901 married iSterling J. Strickland. The family moved to Kendallville nearly three years ago.

Rumors persist in the automotive industry that the Ford Motor Company is planning a six cylinder car which will sell for approximately $1,500 and which will be introduced to the trade this fall. These rumors have gone 80 far as to select a name for it, calling it the Hdsely after Mr. Ford’s son, Edsel. These rumors so Wall street believes have an . influence in the market for mpotor stocks during the last few days. No announcement of new models have been made by the Ford Motor Company.

Judge William B. Hile in the Elk-! hart _superior court issued .an order releasing John Hall and Thomas O’Brien held in the ‘Elkhart County jail to the circuit court at South Bend. Hall and O’Brien were indicted by the grand jury at South Bend for first degree murder as a result of the death of ‘Louis Kreidler South Bend- druggist. : |

Woman Gets Last Word

A woman had the last word in the trial of Charles Gray of Muncie, charged with the murder of his infant son “Baby Charles” “I did not,” Mrs. Zepheria Gray his wife shouted from the witness stand when she had been recalled by the state to deny the charges of her husband who accused her of striking the baby in the back only a few hours before its death. -

A sum of money belonging to the senior clas sof the Waterloo high school which was placed in a drawer in the superintendent’s office for safe keeping was stolen. The silver coin amounted torabout $25. Another sum of money some ssb in currency in the same drawer was overlooked by the thief. - s o

When his expensive sedan caiight on fire Brown Raymond rushed it to a Fort Wayne police station, mistaking the station for a fire headquarters. After puuting out the fire police investigated the cause of his mistake and-arrested Raymond on a charge of drunken driving. . » :

John William Hutt aged 79 years, native of Germany and a pioneer and well known resident of Kendallville died Thursday evening at his home on Grant St., death following a four months illness from uremic poisoning and complications. ‘

Co., made inquiries of the Bristol Bank abopt the sufficiency of Brown’s signature and was told that if Brown signed the notes with Man, warren they were good Brown was then interview and declared he never signed the notes and if his name wag on them it was forged. L ‘When this was put up-to Manwarren by Deputy Banks he at first declared Brown signed them, then that Brown’s name was signed by his son and finally admitted that he signed Brown's name to the notes.
