THE LIGONIER BANNER, LIGONIER, INDIANA.

Bel R‘N AR :' mfi Take Narrow View-of Causs 4 : ‘Economic Field. -Oscar Ameringer - Look out, protectionists, ithe l% worm is turning. For a century the horny-handed sons of soil and toil have voted for protection on every thing they bought and for free trade on .almost everything they sold, with the result that they have just about traded themselves into the condition of the fellow who swapped his horseé for a cow, swapped cow for a blllg_" goat, billy goat for a cur dog ,cur dog for jackknife and then lost the jackknife. 5

The man who threw the gauntlets: down to the congressional mercenaries of the tariff barons was Willlam Wirth chairman of the Cornbelt Conference “I want to serve notice on the protected east,” gaid the embattled: Wirth, ‘“That it had better listen to the farmers’ plea for relief before it brings the pillars of its temple tumhling down on its own head.”_ ‘He continued, ““Thus far we have not assaulted the Fordney-McCumben. tariff act but if we are turned away empty-handed again let them not be: surprised if in our desperation we; make war upon the whole protective system. ' e ) § “If these be plain words then let it be remembered that since the close of the World War the agricultural wealth of the nation has shrunk: twenty Dbillions of dollars and. wrecked banks are constantly increas» ing in the most productive agricultural, sections of the land.” ‘

The twenty billions referred to by Mr. Wirth represent the shrinkage of land values since the war and if that, be the only loss the farmers experis enced since then, they should congras tulate themselves as all' authoritiesagree that if the farmers pay themselves interest on their investments, they work without wages, and if they pay themselves wages they draw no interest. In other words high land values are about as useful to the fartmer who farms the farm as two heads are to one calf.

One of the numerous troubles of the farmers is that they are and always have been one-tenth farmers and ninetenths land speculators. From the very beginning of this country every mother’s son of them grabbed all the landscape he could in the hope that gsome day he could sell or rent it to some brother farmer and then ornament the benches on the Court House Square in the capacity of the retired farmer who farms the farmer who farms the farm. :
