Find Liguer in Cellar

Sheriff Smallwood with his deputy and a federal officer and Marshal Heater went to Liberty Mills Monday evening and visited the cellar of E. S. Rittenhouse in the south part of town. They secured five gallons of some strong smelling liquor that was denominated as home breW, along with a couple of bottles that were unopended but that contained suspicious looking liquor. Mr. Rittenhouse appeared in court at Wabash and was fined $l3O for having intoxicating ligquor in his possession. A sentence of 50 days at the penal farm was given but was suspended on good behavior. —North Manchester News-Journal.

Gentle Spring Far Away.

Gentle spring seemed far far away Thursday morning when the thermometer registered a few degreeg above zero, according to Dr. N. 1. Kitheart’s official record at Columbig City. Dr. Kithecart says the mercury has not varied much in the lasy four days since the advent of March, and that it registered from 12 to 14 during all those days. There has been some snow every day and ‘Thursday was no exception. -The doctor said he did not recall in many Yyears when there was so much snow but it has not lasted long.

Result Unimportant.

Several hundred newspapers are conducting an election on the prohibition question for the purpose of feeling the public pulse. Ballots arg printed in the papers and voters are requested to vote on two propositions. The first is as follows: “Arq vou in favor of the present prohibi, tion law?” The second is: *° Are you in favor of changing the present prohibition law permiting the sale of light wine and beer under government supervision?” The voter must sign hisg name and give his address to prevent repetition.-—Columbia City Post.

Decisive action by the Nash Motors Company relative to congressional adoption of the automobile tax reduction measure is.reported by E. H. McCarty, Nash and Ajax General Sales Manager. “Word was wired our distributing organization March bsth” stated Mr. McCarty, “informing them that in accordance with the established Nash policy of protecting its dealers and customers to the fullest possible extent, we would absorb the tax reducj tion up to March 28th inclusive when the governmental reduction becomes operative,

For Military Training.

Glenn E. Thrapp of Kendallville has been appointed Noble county chairman of the Indiana campaign to enroll 1,500 young men for 'the Citizen’s Military Training Camp to be held at Ft. Benjamin Harrison July 15th to August 13th. The appointment was made by Felix M. McWhirter of Indianapolis Indiana Civilian Aide to the secretary of war, and is the second vear Mr. Thrapp has assumed the respansibilty. i Noble county’s quota has been fixed at 12. Jordy

Oldest Surviving Twins.

William B. and Wilbur F. Chandler, of Keene, IN. H., believed to be the old est twins who served in the civil war, just observed the eighty-sixth anniversary of their birth. Outside of the time they spent in the army when they were in different regiments the brothers have never been separated by any great distance for any length of time. They worked together in the same factory for more than thirty yvears and retired together. |

Tracing Robbery Suspects.

Two strangers who lurked about the streets of North Manchester Sunday evening may be the pair that robbed the Laketon elevator and later blew the safe in the Kratzer jewelry store at Urbana taking $l,OOO in rings and watches. The Manchester marshal had a boy take the number off their Marmon car and the ownership of it will be traced. .

Fined and Bound Over.

Delmar Stapleton bootlegger who was arrested at Huntington when he drove into a ‘trap Saturday night, paid a fine of $lOO and costs this week on a charge of possessing liquor and was bound over to the Huntington circuit court on a charge of transportation of liquor. His bond was pla¢ ed at $5OO. ‘ ;

Death of Mrs. Hiram Butt.

.Mrs. Hiram Butt who resides abouf five miles north of ' Syracuse died Thursday morning about 9:00 o’clock. The funeral was held Sunday at the Solomons Creek church. : Fined : John Stevenson was brought intg Squire Bell’'s court at Syracusq Tuesday for displaying a 1925 licensd plate on the Waco Ford truck. The digplay cost him $9.30.

Thief Takers Elect Officers

The first meeting of the Anti-Thief Association of Noble county was held February 20th in the counsel room of the Sparta State Bank in Cromwell says the Advance. When the meeting was called to order every seat was filled and determined farmers were sitting on the window sills, while others were standing on the stairs leading to the room. Everyone was apparently more than interested and a spirit of determination was prevalent and anxiety to hear every word that was spoken . . The first thing on the program was the election of officers for the following year., H. P. Tucker was elected president; J. W. Beers, for treasurer; Arby Hodge for secretary and a board of directors as follows; Huson Galloway, J. E. Hitler, Calvin Metz, Chas. Dobbins and J. G. Thomas.- It was voted that in the future all business and the allotment of any rewards shall be left to ithe officers and the board of directors and that their decision in all cases shall be final.

Does Not Want County Agent

LaGrange county has decided against the employment of a county agricultural agent according to the LaGrange News. At the meeting of the township trustees last Monday the name of Chester Kimmell of Ligonier Noble county now a vocational agriculture teacher in Illinois, was voted upon. Mr. Kimmel wds recommended by Purdue University and had the endorsement of the official board of the lLaGrange County Farm Bureau. Seemingly heh ad all the qualification necessary for the position. , When a vote was taken only four votes were recorded for him. Then to find out the sentiment of the trustees another vote was taken to ascertain how many of the trustees are favorable to the office of county agent and only one vote was recorded for it.

The Paige-Jewett,

The Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company has announced a reduction .in the delivered priceg of all Paige and Jewett cars in amounts equal to the reduction in war tax under the new Federal tax law. Theprice reduction applies to all cars delivered at retail between March 3 and March 28, up to the time when the lower tax rate becomes effective. This action by the company gives all who buy now the full advantage of the tax reduction so that none need postpone buying till the law becomes effective in order to share in its benefitS. < % i - { The reduction is equal to the difference between 5 per cent, the former tax rate, and 3 per cent. the new rate, and amounts to as much as’ $27.93 on some models. List prices f. 0. b. Detroit remain unchanged. .

Was Very Instructive.

The tractor demonstration held at the Harvey Hoak farm Tuesday and Wednesday was attended by a total of 26 farmers who were greatly interested in the instruction given by R. H. Wileman .of the Farm Mechanics department Purdue says the Noble Farmer. Those in attendance greatly appreciated the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Hoak who furnished plenty of room in the big barn whore the meeting was held, and Mrs. Hoak furnished hot coffee both noon hours.

Osceola Groecer Robbed

The J. W. Mason grocery store at Osceola was held up and robbed Wednesday night by two men who entered the store at about 8:30 o’clock. Mr. Mason was alone at the time and he was covered with a gun by one of the men while the other robbed the cash register. They secured $7O and drovy away in a Ford car.

Acquitted of Murder.

Vincent Keszei 36 of South Bend was acquitted Wednesday afternoon by a jury in the St.. Joseph circuit court of a charge of murder. He pleaded self ‘defense in his action in striking Alex Kish 38 over the head with a billard cue, on the night of January 10. : ;

Burns Cause Death,

Harry Mills Loomis 61 of Elkhart died Wednesday at the General hospital from burns he sustained on February 15. Loomis was a sufferer for paralysis and while seated in an invalid chair his clothing caught fire from his pipe. . i

Recalls Days of Wild West.

The days of the “wild west” were recalled at Bloomington recently when Sheriff Curry was called to a school near Smithville to eject the Indiang who had taken possession of the building. 'The two ‘braves” and a squaw ‘made no trouble,

Employees Receive Benefits. More than fifteen thousand employees of the Standard oil company of Indiana will: receive approximately $25,000,000 in stock of the company March 31 it was announced at Chica--20 1 . = The stock is that purchased through the five-year employes stock purchasing plan which expires at that time. The plan provides that the company add fifty cents to every dollar subscribed b yan employee for stock. g The company has worked out a new stock purchasing plan now which goes into effect immediately. An employee may subscribe 10 per cent of his salary and the stock will be paid out in three vears. ; i

A school has been openad at Belgrade to teach women to drive stcam locomotives. The opening of a new railroad drew attention to the shortage in men. The women pupils do not discard the skirt, which, in fact, they wear rather long, but practical work will probably make - graduates adopt trousers and overalls as so many women did in France when forced by the war to take up men’s professions. :
