Polly’s Weekly Shopping Letter The third of a series of letters comtributed by the Commiftee in the interest o fthe Merchants Co-operative Association, One to appear each week for a period of three months. Dear Anne— : - Here it is the day before Xmas and here I am, sitting pretty, with all my gifts wrapped tied, and tagged. 1 never felt so free in my life. Now Christmas can come with a bang. I'm ready to enjoy it to the fullest extent. The other day I went down town to finish m yshopping lured there, no doubt by Cecil Griffiths clever ad-‘ vertisement which appeared in the‘ paper that day.” My Dear did you by any chance read it? If not dig up that paper and do so at once. It is what you would call in the American verpacular a Wow, If every merchant would write ads like that there is no doubt they would be read. T decided ithat the fellow: who. was- clever enough toc write that ad must have the right kind of merchandise, and I was not wrong in my conclusions, The store-is full of gifts of all kinds including handsome dresser sets, toilet articles, exotic perfumes and powders combined in gift boxes, candies, stytionery, greeting cards, bohemian glass ware in fact everything in that line al Itoo numerous to mention, ’ Across the street Mr. Raubert has an equally attractive display of articles not only for Xmas but the year round. I was especially interested in his beautiful vases his display of quaint pieces of china the. adorable tea sets and the unusually fine line of jewelry. Surely ones’ wants can easily and quickly be filled in this little shop, than which there is none better in town.
I've been gadding around now long enough without galoshes so I bought me a swell pair of zipper. boots at Sisterhens the other day. After J got inside I saw some comfortable looking house slippers so I bought a pair of those too, and believe me they feel great while I sit here tonight writing letters that have gone unanswered for weeks and which bid fair to keep me up till the wee small hours. ‘ You should see the delicious looking candies' in the windows of the Philadelphia candy shop. - I know they're every bit as good as they look too, and if I were ito suddenly turn bandit, Anne, thats’ one window I'd throw a brick thru. Always attractive, ‘the place is more so now, with the beautiful decorations which Mr. Andrews has added both within the shop and in the windows. : I noticed that the Nyal Drug Store displayed some beautiful pieces of jewelry, including some lovely ropes of pearls and other beads of quality. There were also matchless sets of ivory and amber in toilet articles which are new and unusual. Mr. Williams along with the rest of the merchants has made a splendid effort this year to please the most discriminating shopper. ‘ . » I had lunch that day at the Blue Moon. Tea Room but I almost didn’t get in, for the place was. full. However, I managed to find a chair and enjoyed the dinner and the atmosphere of comraderie which prevaild ‘among the guests there. The place is !small and there is every chance for friendly chats with one another, "which I think adds much to the enJjoyment of the meal. In the evening I enjoyed a most delicious supper at the Lincoln Cafe. This is under new management now and is enjoying a splendid patronage. Mr. Eddington seems especially eagerl to give his guests the best of everything and I surely hope he is here to ‘stay. . You knmow Anne, I can’t go past a grocery store or a bakery anymore. But I'd like to know who could nowodays. Everything looks so tempting that its impossible to pass by without going inside. - Why every time I go by the Jet White Grocery I simply have to go in and get a head of let tuce. It is such wonderful looping stuff that I"d buy a head if I had enough at home to feed Coxey’s army. Every time I decide to not get any that day. I think how terrible it would be if there’d be a famine of head lettuce, and in I go to provide for the proverbial rainy day. I suppose Of course head ‘lettuce isn’t the only thing that store specializes -in for its full of specialties but that's my specialty there and its a pretty big one I think. . .
Stellars is another grocery that ig a regular Loreli for wrecking your pocket book. Of course you get value received and splendid values too, but what with pies, cakes meats and to tell you Anne, I usually look like the night before pay-day after I've paid my bill there and order the things sent out, which is one of the convenient features of that store for it would be impossible to carry every thing home. Lepirds Shoe Store was jammed to the doors so I couldn’t get those cute galoshes for Billy that that I had planned on. I went back several times but it was always crowded. There is no doubt in my mind that the present managers are a big drawing card, in addition to the wonderful values which are offered at the unusually low prices. This is the cut rate shoe store here anid unquestion, ably fills a need. . : Dr. Elson gave me a beautiful hair cut today besides a shampoo and marcel. I wanted to be all dolled up for Xmas 8o I decided Dr, Elson could do it if anyone could. Lo By tnis time, Anne, I had finished with my Christmas shopping and was rather tired so I decided to buy me a new hat and since I always lke| plenty of time for a job like that I went up to Miss Stuffs’ and spent a leisurely half haur selecting one. You know, Anne, after all there isn't

anything quite like a hand made hat to give you the feeling that the hat you're wearing was made for you. Miss Stuff has a beautiful and exclusive stock of hand made and pattern hats which are not only a pleasure to examine but a big value besides. It was pretty hard to decide with so many beauties just which one best suited me, but I finally chose a beautiful creation which it would be hard indeed to duplicate and which makes it doubly apgreciated. - 5 When I came down I stopped into Hossingers Meat Market to get some of the wonderful haddock which they sell. You know Anne, that man Hossinger is the best advertisement this town has. About three months’ ago. he went to Florida to spend the winter in ease and comfort and I suppose luxury, But he only stayed a few weeks and back he came. Not ‘eveny the wonderful Florida weather that you read about in the papers could keep him there. The other day he sold his shop to Mr. Biddle of Kendallville and was all set to leave again and don’t you know Anne, he simply couldn’t leave Ligonier. Its’ too good a town. He counldn’t find & better town to go to so he bought the shop back again and we hope its for good this time. All of which goes to show that at least one merchant has found out this town hasn’t a superiar, ' :
Before I came home I stopped into Wilkerson’s to get some sl{oes I had had left for repairs. I hardly recognized them ,however, for they looked almost like new again. That man is a wizzard at fixing shoes, but as enigmatical as the sphinx when it comes to giving information about our booster day. He kept dropping all kinds of hints but when pressed for any real information all he’'d say was: “Wait till after the Xmas rush.” Now if that tsn’t enough to keep you awake mnights I'd like to know what is. \] With Booster day Jan. 6th we have to wait till after the Xmas rush to find out what its all about. All he said definitely was that I should be sure. to ask for tickets and to save every one for they're all geing -to count for ‘something this time, which is good news., -
So I'm going to find out somehow soon and I'll tell you next week all about it. It's funny how mysterious the men can act at times, provoking I wcall it, but maybe after all we would forget it with Christmas on ouwinds.», oA 11 Anne, old dear here’s wishing you a Merry Christmas and the best the New. Year can bring.
