THE LIGONIER BANNER, LIGONIER, INDIANA.

LIGHT AND POWER COMPANIES EXPERIENCE IMMENSE GROWTHi Local Conern and Others Throughout Country Selling Preferred Stock to Ald in Financing Expansion . Coming into existence less than 50 years ago, the electric light and power companies throughout the country now form one of the nation’s largest industries. Preferred Stock of Indiana & Michigan Electric Company which together with other similar concerns has experienced a huge growth is now being sold by the employees of the Company. The buildIng and installing of additional equipment as extensions and additions to the Company’s system must be financed in this manner. - The first electric power plant in the United States, representing an investment of only a few thousand dollars, was installed less than a half a century ago. Today there are hundreds of electric light and power plants with their huge distribution systems throughout the country, representing a total investment of more than $7,000,000,060.00.

Consideration of the conditions now existing shows that the light and power companies still have room for a huge expansion. Only about 50 per cent of the population of the United- States live in home that rae electrically lighted. Less than 60 percent of the industrial “power used throughcut the country is electrically generated it is estimated. To pay for the new material machinery and labor that will be required during the next 10 years to meet the ever-increasing demand for service in the United States will cost at least $6,000,000,000.00, it is estimated. That this immense sum of money will flow into the industry is assured by the fact that its business is essential, the stability of its securities established, and that under wise state regulation it will bo free of the hazards incident to many other lines of industrial activity. i :

In} less than three years the Indilana & Michigan Electric Company has spent more than $19,267,400.00 in additions to its physical property to take care of the imperative demands for service. Since June 30 1923 the meters in use by customers have increased hy more than 7,100 showing the huge increase in the Company’s business. This expansion means a constant need for funds to make extensions and additions to the system in order to meet the demands made

upon the Company for service. Money for such purposes must be raised through the sale of the Company’s securities—such as its Cumulative Preferred Stock. 'Already about 1,600 residents of the territory served by the Company have purchased shares of this stock and many others are buying stock on 'the easy pavment plan by paying $lO.OO per share a month as partial payment. The Lightning Company sellg its stock to its customers believing that as they support the Company they should share in the money it pays out every three months as Preferred ferred 'Stock Dividends. Employees of the Company are acting as salesmen of the stock.
