Enthusiasm of Fifth Avenue
Fifth avenue the world’s most critical street expetrienced a new and happy sensation at the annual automobile ‘salon’ held at the Hotel Commodore New York. Color was the keynote of the exhibits by builders of fine motor coach work., Twelve bodies produced by America’s foremost designers and exhibited on the Lincoln chasais attracted especially keen interest because of the fact that the colorings and color combinations of rare birds were duplicated. The enthusiasm of Fifth Avenue was reflected in the newspapers of the city. The New York Times commenting on the salon said: “A striking exhibit in' respective colors is that of the Lincoln cars. The rich color combinations have been adopted from the plumage of rare American and tropical birds.” The: New York Sum was equally enthusiastic saying: , “The sensational feature of this salon i sthe brilliant color effects found in the many. care exhibited. This {8 particularly so in the case of the group of twelve Lincolns each of which has been painted in strikin'g and contrasting colors of a bird selected for its beautiful plumage. The idea underlying thig method of color selection {8 novel and the effects secured are almost beyond description.”

Exide Radio Power Unit, Announcement was made a. short time ago by the Electric Storage Battery Company of a new product that would prove of exceptional interest to radio fans. It was described as the Exide Radio Power Unit—‘“the battery that is always charged” It was not until today however that a representative of this paper had an opportunity to inspect the new device which is on exhibition in the Blazed ‘Trail Garage the local Exide Dealer. :
The exide Radio Power Unit should provide just the source of filament current that thousands of fan's are clamoring for—a device that gives one all the advantages of the storage battery with practically no care or attention. It consists of a metal container very attractively finished in a rich mahogany color. With"in it, is a compact Exide Battery spe‘cially designed for the purpose, and a charging device directly connected to the battery. A length of wire running from the end of the unit is fitted with a plug which is intended to be screwed into any lamp socket or floor receptacle and kept connected at all times. On the end of the Power Unit are two binding posts marked “A” Battery Plus and “A Battery Minus’’ To these posts are fastened the “A” plus and minus connections of the ardio set. Just above these binding posts is ¢ small switch which is thrown uap or down according to whether the radio. set is in use or nbt. v | After antennae and ground or loop counections are made, and after the “B” batteries have been connected the set is ready for operation. | - The above mentioned switch on the end of the Power Unit is thrown up.‘l the. rheostats are turned on and the{ set is tuned in the usual 'manner;i

When one has finished listeng-in the rheostats are turned off and the switch on the end of the Power Unit is thrown down. This automatically places the battery on charge. Noting the small size of the battery contained in the Radio Power Unit, Mr. Thomas was asked whether it had sufficient: capacity ° for superheterodynes or other sets usiny a large number of tubes. It was explained that the battery had ample capacity to take care of any set regardless of the number of tubes that. were used. At the same time it was made clear that the battery could not be overcharged even though the set were not used for quite a time. This. it was explained is due to the fact that the current is fed at what is known as a trickle charge. It is a principle well understood by battery men and has been used for some time particularly in the charging of railway signal batteries. _ It is apparent that the Exide Radio Power Unit is a wonderful convenience inasmuch as it needs practically no care during its life. There are no moving parts to wear or get out of order and the only maintenance cost is the trifling amount of current used by the rectifying bulb. ‘ To the thousands who appreciate the superior (zu-alities of storage battery reception the new defise ig particularly welcome.
