Galloway of New York formerly of Cromwell a brother of Councilman Marion Galloway of Ligonier and | a cousin of Samuel H. Galloway of the Kendallville Trust & Savings Co. 'banls_t as related in the following story published recently in the Cromwell News: '~ ’ “How would you like to have a salary of $lOO a day and expenses? Well that is what Dr. Jesse J. Galloway of the Geological department of Columbia University New oYrk will draw for three weeks during the latter anit of December. He has been employed by the Yucatan Company to go to Yucatan Mexico December 18 and appraise the oil possibilities on a tract of land and locate a place to drill for oil. He will return January:s, 1925 which is a few days less than three weeks for which the company pays him $1,700 and expenses and gave a check of $1,200 in advance.

More than 22,000 persons were killed and 678,000 injured in street and highway accidents throughout the nation during 1924 it was revealed as city highway and police authorities gathered at Washington with representatives of @automobile and insurance companies in an effort to lessen the toll of the deadly automobile and the grade crossing. The total dead was placed in round figures at 22,600. i - Horse Liniment Has Kick. The home of Omar Young was wrecked and John Atkins is in jail at Richmond as a result of a “swag of horse liniment.” - Adcording to police Atkins crazed fro mthe effects o fteh Hniment which he had been drinking went to the Young home wrecked the interior of the house and fired a shotgun at Young who escaped injury by ducking.
. May Break Record, Indications are that the N. Y. C. lines will make another record this month in the operation of its Twentieth Century trains. Until last Saturday 77 sections of the train had been operated. In November a record was established with 172 trains while in October there were 168 sections of the train and 164 in September. ; - Home For Vacation. : Students from Western college Oxford Ohio will arrive home the last of the week for a holiday vacation. The Misses Helen Kelley, Emily Wigton and Helen Dunkle are attending that school from Ligonier. Insures Peppermint Qil Ruben Yoder of Eden township LaGrange county one of the largest growers of peppermint oil in northern Indiana has insured his 1924 crop against burglary for $28,000.
Dies at South Milford. : Mrs. Addie A. Crofoot is dead at the home of a sister in South Milford at the ‘age of 82 years. Alonzo Hire son of Abraham and Margaret Jane Hire was born on a farm about 3 'miles northwest =of Ligonier Sept. 28 1859 and died at his home in Ligonier Dec. 16 ‘1924 aged 65 years 2 months and 12 days His parents -soon moved to Ligonier and ‘with the exception “of about 9 years ‘the entire life of the deceased was spent in the same house in Ligonier where he died. : - : | On Aug. 17 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary C. Price a nieighbor girl and to this union was born two sons George Hire who died nearly 18 years ago at the age of 21 and one half years Wand Howard Hire of Waterloo Ind. The deceased had spent nearly his entire life in the employ of the New York Central Rail Road first as section' hand an dthen in the Maintenance of Way Department he was always a faithful servant to. his employer.. t : ‘ Mr. Hire was a member of the Fra- | ternal. Order of -Eagles and of the Rallway Maintenance of way em'ployes. : : = )
His fortiture in the midst of his more than a year of suffering was very marked, he made a great efofrt to get well anl loving hands did all in their power to help him but it seemed of no avail and his going on Wednesday evening was the end of a grea't'i struggle but Death was victor. The immediate cause of his death was cancer of the stomach. The regard in which he was held was evidenced in the many who called to see him during his affliction. The Testimoney of the family is this he was a good knd husband and father. - He leaves to mourn his departure ‘the faithful wife and son and three lgr‘andchildren besides these three sisters, Mrs. Frances Gerkin, Mrs. Carrie Wade, Mrs. Grace Culver of Ligolnierand brother James Hire of South Bend and Alonzo McNutt an uncle.
To Have Fine New Hotel
- South Whitley is in a happy frame of mind over the prospects of their great benefactor Mr. Robert E. Hicks building a fine new hotel there which will cost in the neighborhood of $lOO,000. The hotel will contain tifty rooms and these will be supplied with every modern convenience. Mr. Hicks already has options on two fine sites for the hotel and if his present plans materialize the new structure will be under way in the not far distant future,’ Conterences will soon be held by Mr. Hicks with South Whitley ‘business men - for any suggestions iwhlch-they may offer. : ,
Has Woman Coroner. Whitley county has had a woman coroner for almost two years and has elected the same person to the office for the coming two years beginning January 1. . Dr. Alice Williams has the distinction of being the coroner of Whitley county Ind., and according to the New York bureau of vocational information is the only woman coroner in the United Stdtes.—Columbia City Post. o Guests Make Record. The roof of the Albion hotel caught fire from a defective chimney Saturday night and was considerably damaged before the fire department arrived.
