The child had not been well and the mother held her in her 1 arms until she went to sleep and then carried her to the cradle.. The mo- | ther went about her usual housework | thinking the- child was sleeping. | About noon she went to the cradle| to get the child and found it hanging ‘by its neck over the. siderail of thej cradle. . , Big Wheat Yield John K. Matchett of Pierceton got an average of 41 bushels of wheat per acre from an eleven acre tract which was recently threshed. Last year Mr. Matchett raised 95 tons of tomatoes from the same piece of ground. It was not plowed for the wheat but 175 pounds of 2-12-2 fertilizer was used per acre. This yield would indicate that tomatoes are a pretty good crop to enrich the soil. . National Defense Day. Friday September 12 is national defense day. The occasion will be quietly celebrated in Ligonier by the display of the national colors but there will be no elaborate public exercises. .On the question of display. the public is divided some in favor and some opposed to a demonstration. It is a matter in which the individnal citizem may exercise his pleasure. FISH AND GAME NEWS What the State Wardens Accomplished in July and For Ten Months of ' ' the Year 1924 State game wardens in July brought about the arrest of 309 persons for alleged violations of fish and game laws and of this number 291 were; convicted 14 cases are pending and four cases discharged. ' Fines and costs amounted to $5,455.20. As ,all‘; fines go to the school fund taxpayersj in several counties benefited materially from this conservation division which is self supporting. . The reportéflsets out the minor offénses as follows: Hunting and fishing without a Ilicense 132: possession of illegal seines and nets and using same, 80; taking undersized game fish 37; taking fur bearing animals -in closed season; 19; using trot line in lakes 6. Three were arrested for dynamiting fish. o L Forty-four salaried wardens were employed during July this year. " For the ten, months of this fiscal vear wardens made 1,755 arrests 1.652 convictions and secured fines and costs in the amout of $33,464.30 . In the same period last year they arrested 1,390 persons brought about 1. 208 comnvictions and fines and costs amounted to $26,177.57. Gain in arrests for ten months was 385 in convictions 344 and in fines and costs $7,286.70. : - In 1918 the last year under the olc department records show that 31 war dens within a period of 170 month: lonly made 325 arrests and secure 1307 convictions with fines and cost | amounting to. $6,571.45. o _

Two Young Burglars Sentenced. Steve Wilson, 19, of San Antonio, Tex., - and Herschell Chell, 23, of Muncie self-confessed army deserters and burglars, were sentenced to 2 to 14 years in the reformatory by Judge L. W. Roysé late Monday at Warsaw. They were arrested at Peru Saturday morning and brought to Warsaw, where they admitted robbing the Brant and Hearn poolrooms there and Giligan poolroom at - Columbia City. Another Barn Burns. A large barn on the Homer Glick farm southwest of Churubusco burned down late Sunday afternoon. Chemical apparatus was taken from Churubusco in a vain effort to check the flames. Two calves were saved, but all the hay and some grain burned. The loss is partly covered by insurance. : : » ~ Last of old Famidy. | Frank Scott from Ligonier, called at the News-Times on Monday, Mr. Scott has traveled ‘in the interests of wholesale flour companies for the past twenty-five years, and is the last living of theé Scott family, who was noted in the business interests of Ligonier fifty years ago.—Goshen News-Times, Monday.
Yeggs Abandon Tools. Sheriff Milo Meloy failed to find any trace of the yeggs who were frightened away from the Farmers’ elevator at Milford Junction early Sunday morning after blowing .off the door of the safe.
